House Democrats are offering more than $1 billion in subsidies to local newspapers as part of a massive spending proposal released this week, even as polls show record levels of distrust in the media.
The $3.5 trillion spending plan includes up to $25,000 in payroll tax credits for each journalist on a local newspaper’s payroll. The carve-out will cost $1.3 billion over the next decade, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. To offset this and other tax credits included in the bill, Democrats are proposing $2.9 trillion in tax hikes through higher corporate, capital gains, and personal income tax rates.
Democrats hope the proposal will rescue local newspapers, which saw employment fall by 57 percent from 2008 to 2020. More than 1,800 newspapers have shut down since 2004 amid a shift away from print advertising and the rise of online media. Confidence in the media has also waned. Just 21 percent of Americans said they had “great confidence” in newspapers, according to a recent Gallup survey. Only television news, big business, and Congress had lower confidence ratings. […]
Americans for Tax Reform listed the tax credit as one of 10 “giveaways” that Democrats are offering to liberal interest groups in the spending plan. The group, which supports low taxes, noted that journalists tend to be liberal.
The spending bill also proposes subsidies for the solar industry to “promote environmental justice” and a tax deduction of up to $250 for dues paid to labor unions. …

What a moron. You can throw all the money in the world at the papers and folks still won’t buy them. Youngins don’t have any desire, most of us get our news online in real time, a lot don’t trust anything our cities put in print. The only good thing about papers are the Sunday crossword puzzles. LA Times has the best!

I bet that every single press operator, janitor and paper boy will have a column to boost each newspapers take from the public trough.
In America, where a democratic constitution has already been established, the communists must make the common cause with the party which will turn this constitution against the bourgeoisie and use it in the interests of the proletariat …This has been the view the left has of the US Constitution since the late 1840s. Just a means to an end.
— The Principles of Communism
Two well educated people I know, one was head of an academic department at a well respected university, think the whole point is to bankrupt the economy. Then it can be bought up for pennies on the dollar. Kind of reminds us of one particular Jew who helped the Nazis round up other Jews, then went on to wreck economies for profit.
For their own nefarious purposes which is to bring down this Republic and turn it into a socialist utopia where they’re the elite and the rest of us downtrodden into poverty.
They want us to fund propagandists whose primary goal is to mobilize the masses to steal our stuff and then kill us.
Democrat takeover of the local press. They are already partners and participants with the mainstream press and social media. Free press is gone. Free speech is going. RKBA is under assault.
They laughed at survivalists/hoarders until they found out they hadn’t bothered to stock up; then they want to go after those that were aware of what’s going on and demand/steal what they have ‘for the common good’.
If you haven’t tried the Epoch Times yet, give it a try. The trial is free.
I live in Sarasota, FL. Both local papers are 100% leftist rags. The Sarasota Herald Tribune doesn’t publish any Afghanistan news unless it can be twisted as a slam on Trump or Republicans.
I expect more of the same in the next year—I call it “the inflation cycle”—it goes like this:
(1) Federal debt explodes—Fed extends credit—inflation kicks in....
(2) .gov denies there is inflation
(3) .gov admits there is inflation, starts blaming private price gougers (we are starting this phase now)
(4) .gov puts in price controls
(5) .gov rations after price controls cause shortages
(6) .gov attacks hoarders who have “too much” while others don’t have enough...
Keep a _very_ low profile—you do not want _anyone_ knowing what you have when we get to (6).
That’s exactly the strategy of Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven.
Local newspapers,at least they use to,have more independent thought.
Well, the federal government can’t allow that.
PBS had a show on about the Denver Post paper and how it was sold and the number of people being laid off. The people working there were clueless as to why people stopped buying the paper.
During the show they showed images of Trump Trump Trump even though the editors mentioned the downfall started in 2008 with the paper. They blamed the new owners who bought many papers including theirs and were making an average 17% profit and not reinvesting in the paper as if making a profit was wrong.
The news people lie and then lie some more.
That is why people stop reading their paper on go to their website.
The show ended with some of the now ex-employees starting a website for news. They had media out to cover it but they still do not understand THEY are the problem.
