The comedian's management firm confirmed his death to Deadline, and revealed the SNL star was fighting cancer for almost a decade.
Norm's longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra revealed: "He was most proud of his comedy. He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him.
"Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”
The TV star landed on the mainstream radar thanks to SNL, as he made his debut in the iconic sketch comedy show in 1993, leaving in 1998.
During his tenure he was most remembered for his role as the Weekend Update anchor for three seasons, most notably his dry, quick wit.

He stood up for common sense.
May he be with God, now.
Wow, I’ve never heard of him, but haven’t watched SNL since the ‘80’s.
Here are the three seasons of “Norm”

A kind of odd but interesting character. I remember he used to appear occasionally on Dennis Miller’s radio program. I always enjoyed seeing him on “The Middle”.
RIP
He is sorry now that he didn’t buy AndyTheBear’s new cancer vaccine.
I think Norm made up the term fake news.
Would you have believed Bob Dole would outlive Norm ?
You can’t blame the metric system on Canada. France all the way there FRiend
This news sucks.
not to mention the odd spellings of words. Have you seen how they spell maneuver for example? It'll blow up the strongest spell check programme.
You’ll always have plenty of poutine, so there is that.
With all of their hockey hull-a-ba-loo,
How come you never see any black guys playing hockey?
“Now do you think it’s easy to just gradually take over every professional sport? Let me tell you something, man. Brothers have started figuring out this ice thing. Hope you enjoyed it!”
Norm Macdonald on Bowel Cancer | March 9, 2020 | I'm not Norm
Norm MacDonald on battles with cancer: “I’m pretty sure, I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That’s not a loss. That’s a draw.” [David Gardner, on Twitter]
I was just thinking of him yesterday, in a video I had seen of a routine he did in a small club not long after the Plandemic shutdown happened. He said, “Well, at least we know what we’re going to die of.”
Ironic. Of course the audience broke up laughing. No one could dream at the time it would go on and on this way (total manipulation).
He was a straight shooter, very funny and apparently a nice guy. He and Roseanne had a comedy workshop show awhile back for promising young comedians, and he was priceless as a judge and mentor.
Condolences to his family.
Thanks for saying that! He had a classy style only he could deliver.
Terrible news. He was talented and funny.
He kept his fight silent for nine years.
RIP.
Next to Rush, he really was one of the best voices for our side, even if he might not have been totally conservative, he really knew how to skewer the Left.
Very sad. Norm was one of the good guys. May he rest in peace...
