The winter of 1880/81, popularized by author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s 1940 novel “The Long Winter,” was variously described as “the hard winter,” “the black winter,” the “long winter,” the “starvation winter,” or the “snow winter.” Journalist J. Mark Powell wrote in January 2018: “Think you’ve seen severe winter weather? No matter how bad it is where you are, it can’t hold a candle to this, the Mother of All Bad Winters.” The History Guy remembers The Long Winter of 1880-1881.

It’s my favorite Wilder book, too. The family facing starvation, almost freezing to death in their house as they sat before a fire hour after hour twisting grass into stubs that could be used for fuel; storms coming one after another, darkening the interior of the house as they shut out the light. One historian has said that that book was the most accurate portrayal of the conditions that winter that you can find. Not the least bit sentimental—just a harrowing story of hardship and survival. I’d recommend it to anyone. The syrupy Michael Landon thing on television was a joke.

To add to the point of this thread...the Willamette River, in Portland, Oregon, froze to a depth of 7”, in 1924. It’s a big river.

I know, nobody cares what happens to Portland...you prefer the whole city froze....I get it.
