In an internal email, provided exclusively to UncoverDC, Progressive, one of the largest car insurance providers in the United States, informed its employees on Sept. 8 that beginning January 2022, workers who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 will pay a $25 surcharge per paycheck, or $650 for the year. The company, who boasts the popular—and always maskless—character “Flo from Progressive,” declined to reference a specific source for the data used to make its decision, declaring:
“At this point in the pandemic, we know that unvaccinated individuals are 29 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID. The average cost of these hospitalizations covered on our medical plan has been $72,000 and we’ve had several that amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical claims. In total, our medical plan has incurred over $25 million in COVID-related claims.”

The federal government has already passed legislation requiring private insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid to cover testing for the novel coronavirus and coronavirus-related doctor visits without any cost to the patient.
However, when it comes to the question of who’s going to pay for Covid-19 treatment, the answer is murky. For the majority of people who get Covid-19, symptoms are likely to be mild to moderate and can be treated by resting at home, but for those who require hospitalization, the costs could be very high.
Many large national plans, such as Cigna, Aetna, Humana, Centene, and United, as well as some Blues plans including Florida Blue, BCBS of Michigan, and BCBS of North Carolina, have already agreed to waive cost sharing for members’ Covid-19 treatment in their fully-funded and Medicare Advantage plans.
Delta's hurting bad for Pilots right now. Gee, I wonder why?
“ how is that 29 times more? Is this new math?”
The data most likely come from a recent MMWR report https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7034e5.htm?s_cid=mm7034e5_w
“ During May 1–July 25, 2021, among 43,127 SARS-CoV-2 infections in residents of Los Angeles County, California, 10,895 (25.3%) were in fully vaccinated persons, 1,431 (3.3%) were in partially vaccinated persons, and 30,801 (71.4%) were in unvaccinated persons. On July 25, infection and hospitalization rates among unvaccinated persons were 4.9 and 29.2 times, respectively, those in fully vaccinated persons. In July, when the Delta variant was predominant, cycle threshold values were similar for unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, and vaccinated persons.”
A close friend is a flight attendant. Hurting everywhere.
At one time, a lot of young women would jump at the job. She did. Travel the world. Pay your dues in the beginning but make some decent money after a while, good bennies and retirement.
Not so much anymore.
She has over 20 years on. Within the last year or two, got to the point where she was senior enough to have the holidays off. Almost 20 years to get to that point. Says she has to listen to the young ones, with a year or 2 on, griping about working holidays.
Most stats used during the scamdemic have been bold face lies and manipulation.
I remember when they started charging higher rates to clients that didn’t go to college.
There are A LOT of personal habits that actuarily would merit surcharges...
