I think that’s exactly the right comparison. Stalin purged his officer corps really thoroughly. Did not serve him well when Hitler invaded.
Stalin did end up with some capable generals, but it was rough at the start, and the USSR survived because of a willingness to toss millions into the meat grinder.
If the US military is purged (currently happening) we will be utterly unable to confront China, and China knows it.
