About 46 years ago, a Piper tri-pacer (115 kt cruise) was able to keep up with a Cessna 310K (193 kt cruise).
I had flown my dad in the TP from the farm to Moline, Il to get the 310. He checked it over and asked the flight line kid to put a quart in the rt engine. We both took off: me first, with a few minute lead. When he caught up, he suddenly slowed up. I then noticed the rt engine was shut down. I had no problem keeping up with the 310. We set down at the local county aerodrome.
My best friend was riding rt seat in the 310 and saw oil streaks forming on the rt cowling. The line kid had left the filler cap off. Clean up time. Thankfully there was no fire. And the oil level showed it was only down a quart and a half. A night flight might have been the end of that engine, or worse... a fire.
I mean you remove the cap, put in oil then replace the cap then and there; look before closing to ensure the cap is in place. What’s so hard about that?
