the high-rise hotel is built up from prefabricated 3D-modules in cross laminated timber (CLT), stacked between two elevator cores entirely made of CLT. the low-rise cultural center is built with columns and beams of glued laminated timber (GLT) and cores and shear walls in CLT. integrated structural design has eliminated the need for concrete entirely from the load bearing structure, speeding up construction and drastically reducing the building’s carbon footprint.

the wood is sourced from regional sustainable forests

--"Wood burns at 350 to 450 deg F. Steel melts at 2000 Deg F or more for some"

And yet a nice wood fire can bring steel to a red heat ~1000F.
How does that work?

While you are at it PLS have a look at the McCormick Place fire. All steel and concrete construction.

I guess it’ll stand until termites get to it.

Not likely in Sweden.

Thanks.
And a school in Minnesota?

They like the wood look, up in the great white north.

Fire can’t hurt steel. I know that because the worlds greatest structural engineer Rosie O’donnell told me so.

glued laminated timber (GLT)

Hopefully they kiln dried that lumber to below 8%.

Because if they did not, they will fail as they did at CCIs forest products divisions veneer mill back in the 80s.

They did not dry the lumber enough, the cross beams dried out from the heat of the driers in the veneer line and the cross beams pulled away from the vert’ supporting beam saddles and the roof collapsed at that section.

A tree killer????

For some reason that does not sound right?

A tree farmer?

An arborist?

A tree surgeon?

You make him sound like an ax murderer.

That is odd. I have a relative from the panhandle whose house was eaten up by termites.

I recently bought a small house, it was built in 1917, wood frame, native white oak...still quite sturdy.

We sold the larger timber from the farm a few years back, the money pretty much paid for the little 1917 house I bought...sometimes money actually does grow on trees...

Wood has been good to me :-)

St Petersburg Russia is almost entirely built on wood pilings.

Winchester Cathedral was entirely built on wood pilings until the late 19th century when they had to dig out the foundation and reinforce it as the water had started to destroy the supports. The reason was that when they built the thing, they did not drive the piles deep enough to solid ground.

A hell of a lot of weight is on those wood supports and they survived for century's.

If you got a white oak framed house, you got a house that will outlast you, your children, and their children, and their children...

Formosan termites?

I suspect that those were the ones.

Another invasive insect from overseas.

Bad news those.

“yea O K homer. Wood burns at 350 to 450 deg F. Steel melts at 2000 Deg F or more for some. good grief.”

Steel loses its rigidity long before it melts. Ask a blacksmith.
