When you have an adventuresome child, it takes 24 hour vigilance to keep them alive and out of mischief.
Voice of experience.

We had to install a chain latch at the top corner of the front door to keep our youngest in.
Even when he stood on a chair, he couldn’t reach it.
Still, he nearly set the house on fire and flooded it within the same week.

I remember that happened in front of me a few years ago. I was at a busy intersection. Toddler walked right out in the middle of traffic. I ran the red light to scoop him up.

Parent wasn’t paying attention. All it takes is a second if your back is turned. They can move pretty quick!

Thought I would never get my heart beat outta my throat. Whew!

You should have given her safes to play with.

I was a living nightmare for my parents, and we lived on the edge of a swamp.

There’s always the possibility that a child could wander into traffic. The odds of this happening are much higher in an ordinary residential neighborhood, so it’s always best to drive at or below the speed limit in the residential areas. The cars parked on the side of the road present a special hazard, because you can’t see what’s behind them until you’re almost past them. 99.999% of the time, there is nothing behind them, but if there ever is, you want to be able to brake in time.

One of mine did. We put a lock too high for him to reach on the door. Then we had to move the lock too high for him to reach even if he pushed a chair over to stand on. It took just a few days for him to figure the chair solution out.

You are so right, what a missed opportunity to raise my own little safe cracking jewel thief.

She’s in her final year of nursing school because I misdirected her talents.

My 2nd grandson was an escape artist. At 2 one of the neighbors found him wandering around the apartment complex they lived in. It was early in the morning and she was still asleep. I went over and put a slide lock on the very top of the door....where he couldn’t reach it even with a chair. lol

My damn kid is a couple months past two.. He knows how to undo both deadbolts (using his car or books or anything to reach), and then he knows the button is fake and he has to pinch to drop the latch blocker.

He’s figured out all the cabinet child-locks.

He can get the child proof cap off his Zarbees or benadryl or tylenol. Sometimes quicker than I can.

He knows how to open the fence gate.

He’s way too damn smart, and also pretty athletic/agile. NOT a good combination at his age :/

.....

He cannot get through the yard’s No-Dig Fencing, but only because I have a carabiner on the gate handles holding it down.

He can’t open knob doors with the clamp cover thing. He knows how, he just doesn’t have the grip strength.

He barely can’t open the stairs gate, he can do the latch but he can’t lift the door to swing it. He gets real close though.

I put those hotel-style bar packs at the top of all our exterior doors. Those work pretty well.

How in the world did that kid get out on the highway?

My (then) 2 year old grandson pushed out a screen and climbed out a window one afternoon while my son was in the kitchen doing dishes.

The critter walked 1/4 mile to within 20 feet of a very busy road before a neighbor grabbed him.

probably a father himself.

Since the article quotes his son, that's a good bet.
