Hypertension or high blood pressure (BP) is highly prevalent in the aging population. Notably, diet and lifestyle have a strong influence on BP. We investigated the association between dietary factors and BP in older adults. This cross-sectional study included 128 participants, aged 65–80 years. Multiple linear regressions were conducted to examine the associations between diet, including meats, vegetables, grains, fruits, dairy, fats, and added sugar, and BP. There was a significant association between intake of added sugar and systolic BP and diastolic BP in females after controlling for age, income, body mass index, physical activity levels, daily calorie intake, and BP medication use. The model predicted that a decrease of 2.3 teaspoons (0.5 standard deviation) of added sugar would result in a 8.4 mmHg drop in systolic BP and a 3.7 mmHg drop in diastolic BP. Whole fruit was associated with a reduction in diastolic BP in both males and females, and the model predicted that, for every 0.71 cup increase in whole fruit consumption, there would be a decrease in diastolic BP of 2.8 mmHg. Our findings support the dietary guidelines of limiting daily intake of added sugar and increasing fruit consumption to promote overall cardiovascular health in older adults…
…Studies suggest that high fructose consumption has adverse effects on body composition and BP, but the mechanisms by which fructose stimulates hypertension are still unknown….

The year was supposed to be 2019. Sorry!
I’M DOOMED!
Sugar is the devil.
An easy way to drop some pounds is to intake zero liquid calories. Eat mostly animal, fruit, vegetable, with some nuts and seeds.
Lift weights and walk...
Sugar is not ur friend. Avoid that and bread
Every year we’re doomed!
I am not a woman, but definitely “older” at age 81. I eat loads of sugar because no meal is ever complete for me without a dessert, bacon & egg for breakfast, bacon fat for frying, eat frozen foods with sodium galore, use 1/2 & 1/2 with my breakfast cereals, drink coffee with table spoon of sugar & 1/2+1/2, visit fast food joints frequently with Taco Bell & gyros from Arbys are favorites, etc etc.
No health problems whatsoever. Don’t need any prescriptions.
All I do is relentless exercise daily. 23 minutes walk on treadmill with wrist weights and 10 minutes of lifting 30 lbs. Exercise have overcome all my health problems during my 50’s. Caveat, I do not smoke and drink only a small glass of port wine with dinner.
Carbs, for all the bad we hear and that I post in threads, are fine for people, but only with activity to burn them off. However, you also can’t have any current glucose/insulin/fatty liver issues. Under that general situation, you will properly handle the glucose increase from such foods.
You are doing that properly. A huge number of people, don’t, or actually can’t.
Keep it up!
I drink 3 cans or more of diet sunkist orange a day.
I am 63. At least I am not female so I am safe : )
Thank you. I really do not understand why people of Medicare age avoid exercise like it was the plague or something. Daily mild form of exercise is the best thing for seniors. But in my gym all i see is young people in good shape. Where are all the old people?
