Lake Tahoe fire evacuees report facing price gouging
KTLA ^ | 09/03/2021

Posted on 09/03/2021 9:43:11 AM PDT by BenLurkin

A rideshare company quoted a fee of more than $1,500 to be transported from the smoke-choked ski resort at Heavenly Valley to the safety of Reno-Tahoe International Airport, about eight times the going rate. A Nevada hotel-casino outside the evacuation order zone advertised a two-night stay for $1,090.72, almost four times the midweek rate offered a day earlier.

The Caldor Fire spanned more than 328 square miles (850 square kilometers) and was 25% contained Thursday. On Monday, flames raced so quickly toward the California resort city of South Lake Tahoe that officials ordered a mass evacuation of all 22,000 residents. People across the state line in Douglas County were ordered to leave a day later.

The Montbleu Resort, Casino and Spa — a towering 438-room Nevada hotel just blocks from the California line — began offering discounts for evacuees, $60 rates for firefighters and first responders, and free lodging for its employees.

For everyone else, it hiked room prices Tuesday from $120 to $450 per night before taxes and fees.

More people needing services. Prevents hoarding and encourages doubling up.

On 9/11, our local gas stations started jacking up their prices.

I wrote a letter to one of the oil companies complaining about this.

They wrote me back.

In emergency situations panicked people behave poorly.

The 9/11 attack did no damage to the fuel distribution system, yet people were filling up barrels with gas.

Some of those filling barrels were doing so to have some storage, but others were filling barrels to start their own gas stations.

Panicked behavior is hard to explain.

Price gouging is one thing but what was the risk of getting caught in the fire?

--there is no such thing as "price gouging"-

-the "price" of anything is what buyer is willing to pay a seller--

Unless it's regulated or a covered commodity.

In Florida. No particular issue other than covid.

Is it gouging when a home owner insurance company doubles the yearly premium.

2020-2021 $5000
2021-2022 $10000

Is there any law limiting what they can do ?

No claims at all.

I don’t know about a ride share co. charging so much. However, the hotels are shut down as far as I know. As of this morning the fire is 29% contained. Heavenly Ski Resort is working w/Cal Fire running their gondola and ski chairs so fire crews can head off the fire. They are also using snow machines spraying water in high volume. They are doing a heck of a job. Prayers for them!

Insurance companies are regulated by individual states.

Complaining works.

(I am _really_ good at it. :-) )

Supply.
Demand.
Risk.

Pay it or go elsewhere.

And amazing how so many supposedly “free market” supporters forget this.

High values on goods & services creates supply where none existed

Have many friends there and between them and a Lake Tahoe FB page I’m hearing the opposite is happening - hotels have been giving locals great deals.
Also many locals in non evacuated areas opening up their homes and pastures and giving rides to those in need. Places to park motor homes or stash your stuff.
Anyone who gouged will find out the hard way they did wrong.

When Liberty Mutual tried something like that (1/3 increase because they decided to insure my $80K house for $150K) I switched insurance companies to Farmers.

In Florida, no insurance company wants to insure a house on more than 5 acres except for one. There is no competition for that market.

Yes, because people are just as willing to make that drive as is typical during sunny summer days. ...And clients are perfectly willing to schedule a week in advance, or just wait around.

They should impose normal conditions to go with the normal price, or ban any transportation under these unusual circumstances.

I mean if there is monopolistic pricing, or a contrived emergency, I think there can be. For example if someone gained exclusive right to perform the service and jacked the price, or if the transportation company was going around starting the fires...
