A pilot program in Long Beach is teaching first responders how to recognize a person experiencing “agitated delirium,” and then having a trained paramedic administer a sedative to the person, in hopes of reducing the likelihood of using force to subdue them.
Body-cam video from last November shows LBPD trying to detain a man at a Metro Rail Station. The situation lasted for more than 30 minutes before the man jumped through a busted out train window toward officers.
It’s these types of situations, according to Police Chief Robert Luna, that instead of officers using excessive force, a fire paramedic came and sedated the man with a sedative known as Midazolam.
Nearly 1,000 Long Beach firefighters, police officers and about 60 dispatchers are now trained to recognize a person in a state of agitated delirium, whether through drug or alcohol us, mental illness or uncontrolled anger.
On the scene, only a trained paramedic can asses the person and administer Midazolam in these cases.

nightmare......
to be honest, no, sedation on a patient with unknown possible previsous medication ingestion, is not better than manhandling.
Best plan? take care of these people inpatient. Bring back long term mental hosptials.
Teach emergency providers and LEOs how to manage out of control patients. Hell hospitals do it with 100 pound aides.
Oh, that’s not going to be abused. No, never.
Side rails on a hospital bed is also considered "excessive restraint". My Mom is in a Memory Care facility, and they (I think State regs) don't allow side rails. Unbelievable, huh?
My sister had a massive brain injury and which brought on dementia. Terrible violent behavior with strength that took three people to hold her down. It was horrible and devastating to the staff and Dr’s treating her...not to mention family. People were getting hurt yet they would not sedate nor restrain her until she went after someone. .....
I disliked politicians before but it is they who instituted these restrictions on patients who do not need to suffer such misery and torment...nor those who care for them!!!!!
