Ed Asner, legendary actor, activist and philanthropist, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, surrounded by family. He was 91.
Asner, former president of the Screen Actors Guild, is best known for his role as Lou Grant on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spinoff Lou Grant, pulling off the extremely rare feet of playing the same character in both a comedy and a drama series.

Hopefully he’s getting to meet his Hero Joseph Stalin in person.
It begs the question. Can a person be a Communist and a Christian?
I do know Mr. Asner was well known for being a liberal. I don’t know whether he was a Christian or not. I know I would rather be known as a true Christian as opposed to a Communist or a conservative.
Amen.
Ed’s dead. Noted.
He was a very nasty person. That is the nicest thing I can say about him.
Looked it up. Ed’s son’s former wife.
An avowed communist. Good. I hated him and hope he’s burning in hell right now.
Yeah, we’re commanded to do that.
Prayers up.
I agree. America is better off today with one less commie working to destroy our Republic.
“Yes he was a commie. But he was a damn good actor.”
I often wonder about FReepers who say things such as what you just said.
You Freepers are praising a KNOWN-COMMUNIST.
While all of you were watching this KNOWN-COMMUNIST being a ‘damn good actor,’ you were helping pay his salary!
I call that hypocrisy of the highest order! ;-(
He's Dead!
That's Good!
PS: I hated that commie bastard!
No. And it's getting worse by the day. From small town newspapers to major publications. Misspellings, incorrect usage, screwed up homonyms etc etc. Drives me crazy. /rant off
Same kinda people that still watch pro sports and pay monthly TV fees ... giving money to people that want them dead.
I hated Ed Asner’s politics and it sounds like he was an angry, disagreeable human being but he was a talented actor. He was cast perfectly as Lou Grant. It is possible to appreciate his professional talent without admiring him as a human being.
another capable actor whose knowledge of American politics made him sounds like a complete ass
Here is my memory of an incident a long time ago.
Charlton Heston ended up on two sides of issues over a period of decades (supported gun control in 1968, opposed it and worked against it later in life, etc.)*
Screen Actors Guild President Asner battled Heston over right to work legislation and policies of another former SAG union leader President Ronald Reagan.
Charlton Heston later said “Ed, you and I are political foes but we are both actors and I think we should be friends.”
Ed Asner sneered at him and told him “Forget it. I can’t stand you.”
*Great moment at NRA convention in 2000 for Charlton Heston:
Heston then paused to pick up a replica of a flintlock long rifle and continued:
So, as we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: ‘From my cold, dead hands!’
— Charlton Heston, May 20, 2000
That’s the good news. The bad news is that he will continue to vote in all future elections for eternity. Permanently registered.
He finally gets to meet his hero
