Homeschooling Advice Needed
August 28, 2021

Posted on 08/28/2021 1:36:29 PM PDT by metmom

I have been getting more requests for advice on starting homeschooling.

The first thing to do/consider is joining Home School Legal Defense Association - HSLDA.

Here's a link to their website.

https://hslda.org/

They provide state by state advice here regarding regulations.

If anyone can help with finding homeschool support groups by state, that would be great.

Did humble gunner account get hacked? Homeschool is a lot of work, but it is great. My 11 year old loves to read magazines dealing with boatbuilding. It is great when you learn something, like boat building.

Over the years, the homeschool scene has become flooded with websites to the point where it’s like searching for a recipe. A gazillion stay at home moms, mostly moms, that are busy, busy building the website and always have affiliate links that make them money.

It was pretty clean when I homeschooled 15+- years ago.

I don’t know any source for a listings of groups. There used to be some.

All I have to offer is the curriculum that we used. Robinson curriculum which uses Saxon Math in a self teaching way aka teaches them to look things up from previous lessons when they get stuck. It also uses the classics for reading material and the book list is all pro American, teaches morals and most of it is available free online due to being out of copyright.

Your ASSumptions are par for the course.

My son didn’t see the inside of a public school until high school and the kids who tried bullying him did not fare well.

The one I will share is that the kid ended up head first in a snowbank.

My son was taught to take care of himself.

hunt down some pre 2000 textbooks

We used mostly books from 1840 to 1860 or so, except for subjects where more modern ones were needed.

The Illinois Family Institute is a good resource for resources. They had several sessions around the state regarding homeschooling, the state mandated curriculum, etc. Well done. Legislators in Illinois are trying their best to silence the organization. One of their prolific writers has personally had a death threat. They have a wide range of good articles on many subjects.

Isn’t it ironic that people put up with and encourage kids in behavior that will land them in prison for assault if done by an adult?

No, if it had been hacked the quality of posting would have by default gone up.

We used the old hardcover book Saxon math right through Calc.

It is by far the best for math.

Somewhere, on paper, I have a list of the early versions that matches books to answer books and test booklets.

A snowbank? Oh my!

Young Fauntleroy is practically Special Forces, isn't she?

There are so many math options that I actually find superior to Saxon...

Horizons

Christian Light Education (daughter is a math teacher and she said this would be her first choice if she were allowed to choose publishers for her school).

Life of Fred

These are just threes and there are scores out there.

The main thing is to get comfortable with your “style” of home education and read up on different methods before you order your first student book.

Hslda has a list of support groups by state.

Contact the state one and they will provide local groups.

Pre 1960 is even better.

You can trust David Barton’s WALLBUILDER organization : )

I gave up my career to raise my kids.

I was at their schools daily back when they would let you. Very involved in the PTA locally and county wide.

Homeschooled my kids after school. Mainly used ABEKA. My kids had a grasp of Algebra by the 3rd grade by using “Hands on Algebra”.

Threw in some Ayn Rand when they got to Middle School. Started with Anthem.

We used Abeka for science and tried it for history.

I would strongly advise against Abeka history unless the kid is an extreme history buff and cares who DL Moody’s song leader was.

I met only two homeschooled kids who were removed from school because they were bullied. One was diagnosed with cancer. He lost his hair to chemo, and the kids at school kept beating him up. Another was a girl who was assaulted by a boy. In both cases, the principals were no help at all. They didn’t want to punish the kids or call police. You don’t find either of those situations funny, do you?

However, I have come to the conclusion that no child should have to face torment and physical abuse daily.

That is true, and very important. Some people remember what school's used to be like, not what they are today. Today a child who has even slightly different viewpoints from the official dogma can be ostracized and face officially sanctioned abuse. That's not helpful for any young person.

No child should face relentless leftist brainwashing daily either.
