Yes, Brian was greatly replaced by Mick Taylor who was their best lead guitarist - think "Gimme Shelter". Bill Wyman (did some interesting runs) was replaced by the long time black bassist (name?), who I don't understand doesn't join in the Stones' bows. He just walks off stage.
I've always said that Charlie Watts was a limited drummer on his small kit with the same beat to most songs. I wondered if the Stones got someone for more involved fills with a bigger kit what they could do. But then, it wouldn't have the Stones garage band sound.
"Can't You Hear me Knocking" was probably the best example of Charlie's jazz influence and ability. He killed during the mellow jazzy instrumental.
RIP, Charlie. You kept the beat for the soundtrack of my life.
They say Keith is an even better bass player than a guitarist. You can see him on bass on "The Dirty Mac's" "Yer Blues" on the Rock and Roll Circus movie.
Darryl Jones. For whatever weird reason they’ve never officially made him a Stone. I have no idea what went into that. But it’s why he doesn’t take the bow with the band. Of course not being officially a Stone has freed him up to work with others, like Ziggy Marley and Neil Young. So there’s that.
