Can you explain the graphics? The captions claim them to have been photographed, but obviously they are engraved in some fashion. Why is that?

They are woodcuts made from photos. They couldn’t mass-reproduce photos for magazines and newspapers so they did them that way. I don’t know how they made the woodcuts, whether by eye or a more high tech method.

Thanks. Now, I’m wondering when and how the technology permitted showing actual photos. When it finally did, those woodcutters became extinct.

Did a little research. Apparently,
halftone technology enabled satisfactory photograph publishing by the 1880s.
