Venice is planning to change rules for visitors by 2022, including charging for access and setting entrance quotas.
The Italian city is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and measures to control the influx of tourists has been debated for years.
But according to Italian newspaper Stampa, visitors may have to reserve access in advance and there could be turnstiles installed at the main access points of the city's historical centre.

I will not go there again until the stop this nonsense
“This figure might be stale, but I read a few years ago there are only around 50,000 full time residents living in Venice.”
That figure excludes the mainland part of Venice.
Guess the got hank johnson’s tip over memo?
I was there last, end of November 2014, given the time of year it was still super busy. I was happy to hear they finally banned those enormous cruise ships, which basically cast a shadow of St marks square,
Thats the whole point. Too many tourists. So they’re just as happy if you don’t go back.
A lot of places like Venice are best remembered rather than visited again. I feel sorry for those who didn’t get to see it in better times.
Does Venice smell funny with all that water ?
I like this plan, actually. You can’t enjoy the city when there are tens of thousands milling about, and it must be a nightmare for locals. Last time I went it was ridiculously crowded.

I often put this on in the backround because of the classical music.
But it’s a good gauge of where the pandemic is. It was really eerie seeing it so empty.
It’s one of those places, that Yogi Berra had in mind when he said, “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.”
“lot of places like Venice are best remembered rather than visited again”
Was there in the late 1960s with my parents. We were stationed a little over an hour away.
Without a doubt the most beautiful city I have ever seen in my 61 years....a revisit now would undoubtedly be a disappointment.
My wife and I once took a 22 day journey through Europe, starting in Madrid and ending in Rome. One of our stops was in Lugano, Switzerland, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. The scenery was amazing and it was so clean you could eat off of the street. Our next stop after that was Venice. Garbage floating in the water, everybody trying to rip you off, gondola hats with labels saying Made in China. It was the worst stop on our trip and it soured me so much I would never go back.
Venice does not stink like folks say
It does smell more if the tides push the water out ...
Muck smells more than water
It’s definitely worth a visit...
Any city right in water can smell dank at times....
Walking Venice at night is just astounding ....I was there twice in then mid 80s
Glad I was.....
I had that back when I lived on a canal in Fort Lauderdale. Why would I have to travel all the way to Venice for that.
Twenty or thirty years ago, everywhere became too crowded.
and gators...
I thought Venice was sinking?
Been sinking since the last time I was there (circa 1992).
Quick, visit San Marcos square before it disappears.
Better charge 20 Eur.

Same here. That goes for a LOT of places in Europe, too.
Stale water. Not much movement. I went there in 2000. It can finish sinking now.
