Thats the whole point. Too many tourists. So they’re just as happy if you don’t go back.
A lot of places like Venice are best remembered rather than visited again. I feel sorry for those who didn’t get to see it in better times.

The crowds or the charge?
I won’t go either if the crowds are always a thing; could care less about the an entry fee, but the last thing I want to do if I visit a city in Europe is to stand in a crowd of Americans and Asians (I don’t mind Americans OR Asians, but I don’t want to go to Italy and not see and experience actual Italians and Italian culture.).
There are less and less places in the world I am interested in traveling since most major ‘destinations’ are overrun with foreign tourists - maybe I’ll just buy an RV in retirement and head into the wilderness instead, where there are not as many tourists...)
