Earlier this month, we brought you the story of a Fremont Chevrolet mechanic caught taking a customer's C8 Corvette for a high-speed joyride, and it was even worse than that classic setup makes it sound. The tech ran the car up to 148 mph on a public highway in a street race that went viral once the video from the car's Performance Data Recorder was shared online.
Michael showed up at the dealership the next morning, the general manager, Boni, met him outside, and he was taken to his office where the paperwork was completed and the new car was ordered. "We configured my 2022 together, [and] he let me push the submit button so my order is in with GM."

There’s no such thing as a 2021 Camaro GT 5.0L. Or a Camaro GT. There was a 5 liter engine (305) in a Camaro in the 80s…and of course the 302 Camaro in the 70s.
If you’re gonna make stuff up, do your research.
They had a senior mechanic at the Mercedes dealer in Nairobi who totaled a customers SL-300 (IRRC). The customer was a government minister (Transportation?)
The dealer immediately told the customer that they would get him a new car.
He said, “No, I want you to pay me for the price of the car, plus Sales Tax and Import Duty. Sales Tax and Import Duty are compounded, which brought the total to US$2.3 Million!
No one believed that the government minister would pay more than a tiny fraction of applicable Tax & Duty.
IIRC, Sales Tax was 150% and Duty was 240%. Kenya wanted to charge us US$76,000 in taxes for our $12,700 Land Cruiser utility model.
We registered it in Uganda for “only” $4,500.
Read the earlier post. It was a Ford Mustang. No, it wasn’t made up.
The DZ302 was available in 67, 68, & 69 Z/28 Camaros. No 70’s.
Q: Can the car record audio?
A: No. It’s considered illegal to record audio in some states without consent.
I have a friend with one of the first 20 or so production C7 models. It records audio but that mistake was corrected after about the 25th car.
What's the fun in that? Just holding up a fine FReeper tradition!
I bought the excerpt was enough. There's more?
Thanks. So he didn’t get to keep the first one that the tech took out for a joy ride.?
Wow, that was a shocking settlement.
Wow, those are astonishing numbers.
A company I worked for sold a lot of very high tech communications globally. Getting equipment into Brazil was a huge challenge because they charged import duties at similar rates you are quoting. It was all done to build up domestic capability in Brazil. We found a few ways around the problem.
If the got a clear view of the Dodge Challenger’s plate, he’s in for a lot less trouble than the Corvette driver. He racked up several thousand dollars in traffic citations in just the first few minutes, including doing up to 85MPH in a 45MPH zone, unsafe lane changes, crossing double lines, passing on the right, driving in the parking lane/bicycle lane, and running a red light (he did a California right on red without stopping!). Those were all before he ever reached the freeway on-ramp. Exhibition of Speed is a separate infraction as is reckless driving. The number of points he’ll get on his driving record will cause him to lose his license and his insurance rates will begin to look like the National Deficit.
That idiot mechanic put the dealership and the Corvette owner at high risk of liability losses with his reckless stunt. If he’d hit a high earner (a highly possible scenario in the Fremont area), killing or paralyzing them for life or mentally impairing them, the financial liability could be through the roof! Many courts have ruled the car owner is on the hook as well… and their insurance has to pay for repairs and medical when your agent (the repair shop) injures a third party while driving your car with your implied consent which you give by turning it over to them for normal repair which may include test and retest driving. So the car owner would have to at least lawyerup to defend any suit that might arise from a test drive incident that exceeds the limits of his insurance liability coverages.
If he didn’t hit anything ....that Vette can handle it
My brothers lingenfelter could do 148 in fourth gear ....
Not saying it’s appropriate
I can’t believe that the “implied consent” includes consenting to illegal acts. If the mechanic stops at a bar for a few drinks while test driving a customer’s car then gets in an accident, why should the car owner held be responsible in any way?
Seems crazy, but these days anything is possible. The legal system is crafted by lawyers to make lawyers necessary.
If you are not trained for high speed driving {I wasn't} it is exciting but frightening and dangerous.
I was much younger and even more stupid than I am now, but that was really insane.
—”If he didn’t hit anything ....that Vette can handle it”
Mostly true and it did NOT look like he was beating it.
I always let my buds make a few laps on any of my bikes, I knew if they broke they would help make the repair, and I rode their bikes.
It was not unusual in my experience for another competitor to offer you a few laps on their bike.
Yes, they were usually dealers or reps, but not always.
That said, this feels more like some jamoke taking a sip of your very nice drink without your permission.
Thank you for a nice respite from Jamoke joe.
You want to race
If you insist
At that price
I can’t resist
You can buy a small gopro and put it there....where you need it. it doesn’t have to be from the factory.
“He could be on the hook for $20k or $30k.”
You don’t owe taxes on gifts you receive.
That’s Right!
