Huge Asteroid Bigger Than the Empire State Building to Pass Earth This Weekend

... 2016 AJ193, will fly past our planet on August 21 at around 11:10 a.m. EDT.

When it does so, it will be traveling at a speed of around 26.1 kilometers every second...

NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) estimates that 2016 AJ193 is about 4,500 feet in diameter, but there is an uncertainty of about 1,300 feet either side of that figure.

As a result, 2016 AJ193 could potentially be as big as 5,800 feet across, though it could also be significantly smaller. The Empire State Building, by comparison, is around 1,250 feet tall.

While Saturday's pass is deemed a close approach by CNEOS, 2016 AJ193 will actually pass our planet at a distance nearly nine times further away from us than the moon is.

It will then shoot back off into space on its highly elliptical orbit around the sun. The asteroid makes one orbit around the sun roughly every six years.

CNEOS states on its website that "the threat to any one person from auto accidents, disease, other natural disasters and a variety of other problems is much higher than the threat from NEOs (Near Earth Objects)."

// Of only passing interest. If we DID sustain a hit of this size, most of the other problems in the world would be instantly diminished.

Especially if it were targeted directly at mecca.

Way bigger than Tunguska, this one would get to the ground and create a good sized crater and do much damage locally within a 30 to 100 mile radius probably total destruction and death within.

...will actually pass our planet at a distance nearly nine times further away from us than the moon is. —

9 * 238,900 = 2,150,100 miles

Since this is so much closer to the Earth than the supermassive black hole collision that LIGO detected, the mass of the object is so much less than a couple of supermassive black holes, those two factors would tend to cancel out.

The question is then due to disruption of space-time as the object passes by the Earth and moon, will the flag on the moon left by Apollo 11 wave? From my flying days, to get a flag straight the wind was probably about 20 mph. I'm sure some physicist might see the importance of this question and will apply to the BuyDEN administration for a grant. //sarc

So the Barringer crater. Depends on where it lands.

If it did collide with the earth, women and minorities would be disproportionately effected.
