WASHINGTON, SUNDAY, Aug. 18.
It has been well ascertained that agents of the French Government have been engaged for several weeks in purchasing large quantities of breadstuffs, both at the West and in the Eastern storehouses. The lowest grades are taken. Whether this is because of the scarcity of grain in France and a timely precaution against exorbitant prices, or whether the Government is preparing for a war footing, is of course matter of conjecture, as its agents have no information beyond instructions to buy.
CORRESPONDENCE.
The increase of correspondence from the Washington Post-office, consequent on the war, is enormous, 70,000 letters a day being sent off.
MR. FAULKNER.
The place of MR. FAULKNER's imprisonment will be changed to Fort Hamilton. He will not be examined until the evidence upon which he was arrested is used to secure the arrest of others implicated with him.
MOVEMENTS OF THE REBELS.
Reconnoissances and close observations indicate that the rebels are closing in upon our lines. Three mornings since, Mr. MILLER, of Albany, observed with his glass from the tower of the Seminary, three miles from Alexandria, that the rebels were throwing up intrenchments on the hill, about two miles northwest of Bailey's Crossroads, on the northern road to Fairfax. A close observation showed that beside the earthworks and abattis around the brow of the hill, a stockade had been erected across the roadway. Early the next morning, a heavy volume of smoke ascending from behind the hill, led the officials of Col. MCLEOD MURPHY's Regiment to conclude that the rebels were there in force, and a subsequent reconnoissance confirmed the conclusion that probably a Brigade was encamped behind the hill.
