Snakes on a shelf: Massive python surprises shoppers at supermarket
NY Post ^ | 18 Aug 2021 | Ben Cost

Customers at an Australian supermarket got an unexpected wildlife encounter after happening upon a 10-foot python slithering about the shelves.

The accompanying 12-second footage shows the brilliantly speckled diamond python — which resides in coastal areas of New South Wales — jutting out from the spice aisle like a prop on a Disney “Jungle Cruise” ride.

“It just wanted to say hello,” the surprised shopper said. “Dozens of people must have walked past it.”

Alati, who coincidentally used to serve as a volunteer snake catcher, added that she was lucky it had popped out at her, saying, “Most people would have freaked out.”

“It was chill, and not aggressive at all,” said Alati, adding that the diamond python “slithered right into the bag.”

I don't usually grocery shop, but when I do, I don't expect any snakes.

I hear fresh snake is good, but I think that one might be a little to fresh.

I guess the snake was out “grocery” shopping. I hope for its sake it was masked up.

We have a lake cabin - rustic, but I wouldn’t expect wildlife to be IN it. My bro was up early making coffee ... some movement caught his eye ... he was somewhat shocked to see a fairly large black snake coming out from behind the microwave that was sitting on the kitchen counter! Fortunately, he was the one who saw it, not ‘certain other’ folks in the family who would have likely fainted. Anyway, the snake was caught & released outside. We do not know how it got in, but it was likely hunting mice ... which we do have on occasion in the cabin.

Years ago in a Miami grocery store I found a huge hairy tarantula guarding a bunch of bananas. I went home without any bananas that day.

Better a python than something actually dangerous. Even at that size, a python is unlikely to pose much of a threat as long as it’s not being antagonized. Anyone familiar with pythons would be able to handle and remove it from the area.

Sydney police have taken the snake into custody for traveling beyond it’s allotted radius and refusing to wear a mask . . .

Saw a rattlesnake downtown Tucson in 1975 passing an alley, ever since then I’ve been a little leery passing any alley downtown, haven’t seen a one there since then, though.
