"The Great Rebellion: Further Reports of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek – 2-3" The Times is still hoping to make it sound like a Union victory, and, just as at Bull Run, up to a certain point it was.
But then three things happened which turned it to a Confederate victory:
- Union forces under Gen. Lyon lost contact with those under Col. Sigel and could not support each other.
- Co. Sigel failed to post sentries and so was surprised by Confederates attacking his flank.
- Gen. Lyon was killed and without his leadership Union forces retreated.
So we'll see how long it takes the Times to tell us the hard truth of this matter.
