Sleeping in the truck, he had sufficient reason to believe that he was being attacked, and had the right to defend himself, fearing that his life was in danger in his temporary home. Should have protected his life that was in imminent danger, and stopped there.
But he did a few things that will certainly land him in the slammer.

I just spent $800 replacing catalytic converters on a Ford Ranger that isn’t worth much more. And I got away cheap.

To me a ‘victim’ is a babe trying to get to her car in downtown Cleveland after working a shift at the hospital, not someone cutting off a Catalytic Converter.
If the shooter wasn’t already felon, he’d be scot-free in my book, but in this case, I’d probably vote to send him up the river.

Repair shops ripping off people just as bad as the thieves. $1,000-$2,000+ ??? A Magnaflow converter for my rig is $149. Maybe $50 labor.
