A Texas man who was shot six times is still waiting for surgery in a Houston hospital about a week after the shooting as the facility struggles due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Joel Valdez is waiting for surgery at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston, Texas and spoke to Fox 26 about the situation, advising people to do their best to keep healthy and not end up in the hospital right now.
Ben Taub Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is operating at 98 percent capacity, according to a spokesperson for the Harris Health System, while 33 percent of those patients have conditions related to COVID-19.
Valdez, who is a local business owner and father, spoke to Houston's Fox 26 from his hospital bed on Friday.
He was shot by a stranger last Saturday morning while leaving a Kroger on the 9100 block of the city's W. Sam Houston Parkway.
Police have arrested a suspect and charged him with shooting Valdez earlier this week.
"Having broken bones and bullets in me for over a week now, it's a little frustrating," Valdez said.
"I got shot in the neck right here, but I got hit three times in my left shoulder. That's what is broken and what I'm awaiting surgery for," he said.

The guy who shot him was either the worst or the best shot ever.
When you allow positive covid-19 illegals to come into our country by the thousands what on earth do you expect??????? Only the dummies in Washington, DC are this stupid to continue to blame the Unvaccinated Americans to be the problem. GOD help the America people from democrats, especially the current dummies in the White House and congress.
My uncle died with a pellet in his eyelid that was never removed. He carried it for about 75 years and dies at about 95 years old. There are no greater liars on the planet than weather people, politicians, news papers and the internet.
“Related to Covid” might mean that they tested positive by the PCR test with an unknown number of amplification cycles needed before the test picked up a fragment of some thing. Until our government shares with us the number of amplification cycles being used before the threshold is reached for a positive as well as how many people who are in the hospital having tested positive after arrival for something not related to Covid, I don’t believe anything the government or the propaganda media says.
“Illegals are coming for the Free Stuff and they don’t care Americans have to give up everything.”
For sure, just ask Arnold Swartznegger, “Screw your freedoms”. What a jerk.
Or that Valdez was a member of the American Legion...er, or something like that that wears colors as ID and uses contorted hang gestures to identify their affiliation.
This sounds so bogus as to be laughable.
Wonder if it has anything to do with hospitals telling staff to either get vaccinated or get another job?
This story is really the lowest of the low IQ propaganda on covid yet.
not too unusual so long as his condition is stable, as it appears to be or he wouldn’t be giving interviews a week after his injuries
” Texas man who was shot six times is still waiting for surgery in a Houston hospital about a week after the shooting “
Sounds like Canada
ICUs are probably near capacity at all times....there not going to build one and have a low capacity...
“”Why are COVID patients in Surgery where this guy needs to go, something smells like a pile of Obama here””
Excellent question.....
Being Harris County the shooter will be back on the streets before the victim gets out of the hospital.
I used to live in Houston. It was the rule that if you are dying, Ben Taub was the place to go because they deal with more shootings and stabbings than anyone. But, if you weren’t dying, you might wait in the ER tens of hours before they got around to you. It’s a county hospital.
Hunting accident? No, I think we have a crime wave in Houston. I think there are other victims of crime in this hospital. And if they thought surgery was the right medical treatment he would have surgery. But wearing masks won’t stop the 6 bullets or the guy who put them there. This is a story about rampant crime masquerading as a story about Covid.
Pure BS and covid fear porn crap.
For most level 1 trauma centers and tertiary care facilities, operating intensive care units at 80 percent to 90 percent capacity is standard — even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. But the intensity and duration of caring for severely ill patients during the pandemic have presented unique challenges for hospitals.
