WASHINGTON, Thursday, Aug. 8.
The Surgeon-General reports the sick and wounded in the various hospitals under the charge of Government. They sum up -- at the General Hospital, E-street, Washington, 225; at the General Hospital, C-street, Washington, 65; at Columbia College, Washington, 258; at Union Hospital, Georgetown, 206; at Miss ENGLISH's Seminary, Georgetown, 181 -- making a total of 935 in all the hospitals on this side of the river. The hospitals at Alexandria are not included.
A.B. TALCOTT, for a number of years the Superintendent of the telegraph lines running from this city, has invented a cypher system for the use of the Government, which even the author cannot translate without the key. If the key does not get to the possession of the rebels through the Government employes, the system will be of great value to the Government.
This morning one regiment of SICKLES' Brigade crossed the eastern branch, and another regiment will follow to-morrow. They will be distributed along the eastern shore of the Potomac, from the Insane Asylum to a point six miles below. The result of this movement will be to cut off in a great degree the communications of the rebels with their spies and agents in this city. The Third Regiment of SICKLES' Brigade, Col. TAYLOR, marched in review before the President this afternoon.
Gov. STEVENS, of Oregon, has not accepted the Colonelcy of the Seventy-ninth Highlanders. The Regiment claim the right of electing their own Colonel, and Gov. STEVENS is not willing to be forced upon them as their Commander.
The excursion train from New-York via Easton, Reading and Harrisburgh, left at eight this evening on its return.

I have recently visited the battle sites near Springfield MO and Pea Ridge AR, connected actions by forces noted in this edition of the NYT. It was interesting to see the topography and relief of the areas as it related to the battles. One of the historical interpretation signboards said the area was less forested in the 1860s than now.
Tomorrow’s Harper’s Weekly post will have several replies relating to the war in Missouri. The Wilson’s Creek battle is on August 10.
General Lyon might have been better off backing away from Wilson’s Creek instead of attacking there.
