Legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden dies at 91 The Hall of Fame college football coach Bobby Bowden has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer By STEVE REED AP Sports Writer August 8, 2021, 6:04 AM • 2 min read Bobby Bowden, the folksy Hall of Fame coach who won more than 350 games and built Florida State into one of college football’s great dynasties with two national championships has died. He was 91. Bobby's son, Terry, confirmed to The Associated Press that his father died at home surrounded by his family early Sunday morning. Florida State also announced the news on social media. Bobby Bowden announced on July 21 he had a terminal illness that his family later said was pancreatic cancer. He had been treated for prostate cancer more than a decade ago. With charm and wit, Bowden piled up 357 wins during his 40 years as a major college coach, from tiny Samford — his alma mater, then known as Howard College — to West Virginia and finally at Florida State, where he went 315-98-4. The Seminoles were a force during his 34 seasons as coach, winning 12 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and national titles in 1993 and 1999. Bowden retired following the 2009 season with a Gator Bowl win over West Virginia in Florida State’s 28th straight postseason appearance, a victory that gave him his 33rd consecutive winning season. ——— AP Sports Writer John Zenor in Alabama and former AP Sports Deputy Editor John Affleck contributed to this report.

I lived in Tallahassee during the Dynasty. I met him briefly. I’ve never met anyone like him.

A difficult day here. A Leader and Molder of Men. A Champion for Christ. A finer gentleman has never existed. Beyond devastating but buoyed by the fact he’s gone on to glory on the Lord’s Day..

RIP Bobby Bowden. He put FSU football on the map when prior to his arrival it was a nothing, overshadowed by Florida in state and the SEC regionally. Ninety-one is aa good run. And he was a devout Christian.

Had the pleasure of attending FSU while he was coach including during the 99 championship run. It was one of the most spectacular years of my youth. The football fever at FSU was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.

“Watchout - we’re fixin to score”...

A football coaching clinic article I read many years ago... Bobby Bowden was in to analytics before analytics was cool.

He had an evolutionary opinion and tactic upon being buried inside his own 5 yard line on offense. The article stated the high percentage chance of the other team scoring (? 82 percent) if you punted from inside your own 10 yardline and the chance of the opponents scoring a TD of about 57 percent.

Bowden was aggressive for an older FB coach. He stated that 1. Traditional running plays were inefficient as the Defense was stacked on the line. 2. The best approach in this situation was A) play action pass and B) A deep strike down the sideline (depending on defensive coverage).

The guy was a great FB coach and big on playing the percentages even if it violated “old school” myths.

Bobby Bowden RIP, He’s fixin to score.
