"The barred owl's presence in Central Park brought so much joy, reminding all of us that the Park is a vital greenspace for all New Yorkers, including the wildlife that call it home,"
Barry spent the last 10 months being a focal point for New York City's birdwatchers. Countless photos and videos of Barry have been posted to social media, gaining admiration from both locals and those who live outside the city. Owls are typically nocturnal — but even during the day, many were able to capture Barry splashing in the water and appearing to pose for photos.
Barry was first found on October 9 by a group of birdwatchers. Among the group was Robert DeCandido, who has led guided bird walks in Central Park for more than 25 years, according to his website.

No way, was anyone working for the City moving fast enough at two AM to take out the bird.
the bird coulda been distracted by watching paint dry, and didn’t notice the slow moving vehicle inching towards it
Barry’s last bash.
Hmmm, talk about timing.
I guess that Russian cat should cancel the flight to JFK
Their heads swivel and their eyes see shit no other can see .... and it didn't / couldn't get out of the way of a YUGE maintenance vehicle ?
in my best new yawk ..
bullshit.

That troublemaker sure gets around.
Difficult times for nocturnal aviators!
:)
metaphor for the govt-pushed vax shots
The Barred Owl (Strix varia) has one of the most distinctive calls of all the owls. It and the Chuck-wills- widow are my favorite.
—”couldn’t get out of the way of a YUGE maintenance vehicle ?”
In my misspent youth, I briefly worked at a vehicle maintenance facility.
Friday evenings after closing was a social period, and at some point, someone would shout “Friday Night Race”!
Everyone would run to the dispatch office and grab a random key from the wall. Then run to the lot looking for the vehicle...The first one to make a lap of the parking lot gets free pizza that night.
Many of the cars/trucks are NOT operational; just like some of the participants.
I could easily believe that some wildlife was lost in the game.
Lotsa folks with too much times on their hands!!
who ... who ....
who’s fault?
Doesn’t Jerry’s cousin Jeffrey work for the Parks Department?
Yeah ... we did that in the motor pool in Korea .... but owls are not hanging around on the ground.
Sounds like the poor owl died of COVID and crash landed into a truck
I’ve narrowly missed hitting an owl on several occasions.

“The oldest recorded Barred Owl was at least 24 years, 1 month old. It was banded in Minnesota in 1986, and found dead, entangled in fishing gear, in the same state in 2010.”
Barry was singing the night away and then this!
I was riding a motorcycle in central Oregon one night, and passed maybe a foot beneath a great horned owl. I was going about 60 mph, and that bird’s wingspan looked at that moment like it reached clear across a two-lane road.
