New Mexico targets vehicle emissions
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | August 1, 2021 | Theresa Davis

Posted on 08/04/2021 9:52:54 AM PDT by CedarDave

New Mexico is crafting “clean car” standards that could go into effect by 2025, in an effort to target the state’s second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

State regulators want to adopt California’s rules requiring more fuel-efficient vehicles and zero-emission vehicles. California’s standards are the strictest in the nation, and states can choose either to adopt those rules or the federal government’s more relaxed standards.

Rules would apply only to new vehicles, said Sandra Ely, the New Mexico Environment Department’s Environmental Protection Division director.

“You don’t have to retrofit your vehicle,” Ely said. “It does not apply to off-road or heavy-duty vehicles like farm equipment, and it does not require additional emissions testing.”

A low-emission vehicle, or LEV, standard would require manufacturers’ new fleet deliveries to New Mexico dealers to meet a combined specific emissions standard over a one-year period.

From 7% to 10% of vehicles that in-state dealers offer beginning in 2025 would need to be zero-emission under the rules.

Ely said the rules would help expand vehicle choices to include more fuel-efficient options that other clean-car states have.

“The variety of models will still be there,” she said. “SUVs and trucks will still be available under these standards.”

NMED data shows the transportation category emitted about 16 million metric tons in 2018, or 14% of greenhouse gas emissions. The oil and gas industry accounts for 53% of state pollution.

The state estimates the changes would slash carbon dioxide emissions by about 2 million tons by 2030.

Claudia Borchert, NMED’s climate change policy coordinator, said adopting clean car standards is an important part of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 45% by the year 2030.

What BS - more regulations always reduce the choices that are available. In eastern New Mexico, many residents and businesses buy new and used work vehicles, P/U trucks commonly, from dealers across the state line in Amarillo, Lubbock and Midland/Odessa and the selection will be greatly reduced if these cars and trucks have to meet NM emission standards.

There’d be a lot less emissions if they’d deport illegals.

Don’t forget the reduced choices will be more expensive.

There's no such thing as a "zero emissions" vehicle. Even an EV charged at home with solar, even in New Mexico which has plenty of sunshine, isn't truly zero emissions.

I'm not against EV's. I may one day buy one if they keep improving and the costs keep coming down. Particularly if my own solar system on my house has paid for itself and I'll use the money it saves beyond that to either repair/upgrade the solar system and/or buy an EV to take advantage of the excess power I have some days.

But mandating it is a bunch of crap.

Check out the hummer ev. It’s a beast! Even has independent steering of front and back wheels for those trails where steering gets tricky. It can sorta crab-crawl out of tight spots. Plus the stats on it were quite something. Likely costs an arm and leg though

This clip from the article:

“A lot of our dealers have stores across state lines,” said Ken Ortiz, president of the New Mexico Automotive Dealers Association, whose association represents nearly 100 storefronts. “They may have several vehicles in other states that may meet all the demands a customer wants, but because that state may not have the same emission standards, there may be challenges finding a vehicle from a state that meets the California and New Mexico standards."

Yeah, you think?!

Even more interesting is that companies that work in NM and have offices in Texas are already running their work out of Texas and just coming to NM for the work with their Texas trucks and equipment and then brining it out of NM. Nobody that needs to, is operating all operations in NM. They just come in, do the work and leave. Keeping the bulk of revenue and bulk of workers out of NM.

Had two of our work trucks vandalized with catalytic converters cut out - just now getting them replaced.

No thanks. I'm not into spending that kind of money on a car.

Ford is saying they'll have an EV F-150 next year. It's supposed to be as powerful as a 6-cyl F-150 and have 250 mile to 300 mile range (depending on which battery package you get) and start at $40K. Nothing fancy. Just a useful truck like I have now. If it operates as expected the first few years, and if I can buy a used one at a descent price whenever my current old truck gives up the ghost and I'm in the market for a replacement, I'll get something like that.

But even with that my wife will still have a gas car for long trips and such. So my family won't be full EV like the Dims want us to be. But I don't mind moving the needle a little bit to take me further into energy independence so that's one less thing the Dims can have control over.

Why not? With our damn California-emulating socialist liberals in charge in ABQ and Santa Fe, they see no down side to getting rid of oil and gas operations in New Mexico. Lose over one-third of state income going to schools and the state budget - no problem, we'll make it up selling marijuana and income from solar panel and wind turbine installation and maintenance, change tax codes already unfriendly to business, and have the rest made up from Uncle Sucker in Washington. That is truly their mindset.

Yep that is a huge problem. They can get them off in the blink of an eye practically these days.

There are a lot of scumbags in this world who think nothing of ripping off someone who works hard for, their living. (The more radical of Blm and antifa, the domestick terrorists within those two groups, who also think that they have a right to destroy other people’s property and steal from them).

Those converters ain’t cheap either, plus the cost for labor to replace them

Good plan- not a good idea to go full ev after reading the writing on the wall. Good to have Gasoline backup for when the inevitable brownies and blackouts hit all across the nation as the energy grid takes a massive hit from increased use or cyber attacks.

The left pushing for ev’s will at same time they will be increasing electric prices AND restrictions on electric consumption once the demand increases significantly.

Made a point to tell the boss last month that all the yard lights on that side the building were out and the security camera (stolen years ago) had not been replaced. Got ignored so in addition to catalytic converters stolen, crooks cut the chain link fence last weekend and stole our welding trailer with all its equipment. That finally got his attention. He’s always lecturing us about equipment, but the failure to do something so simple as replace security lights and camera is only on him.

Exactly. Right now natural gas on the commodities market is about twice what it was this time last year. And with the Obama EPA forcing some power companies to shut down some of their coal plants and replace them with natural gas plants, that means our power costs are more tethered to natural gas then ever before. Then Trump started exporting LNG to Europe, which I'm for to undermine Russian control over the world, but that kind of stuff increases our natural gas price too. Then Biden has started banning fracking, which lowers supply of natural gas, which increases price.

Stuff like that is why I did the research, and installed solar onto my house custom designed for mine and my wife's particular power consumption, onto a house that gets plenty of Alabama sun with no trees blocking it and with part of the roof facing south towards the equator. If power costs go up with an inflation rate of 3% or so it'll pay for itself in about 12 years. If the Dims keep jacking up costs at a higher rate than that it'll pay for itself a lot sooner. Either way I'm producing about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the power I consume. Thus I removed myself of the anxiety of some of my expenses having a lot of variability when I move into retirement soon.

For the communists, these efficiency standards are like building sand castles near the water at the seashore...

Build a castle...The tide comes in and disappears it...
Repeat...Repeat... Ad infinitum...

It's all about control and enforced obedience...

In the global warming fraud, these days, that wonderful volcano in Iceland is Earth's CO2 tide... (Gravity still plays a role...)

In the past 3-months it has probably overwhelmed all the communist's sand castles that have been constructed over the previous several decades...

However, the communists are fine with that... Anything that protracts the fraud protracts their control over the serfs...

The serfs, in this case, do not care... They expertly follow the most important rule set forth by our masters:
Bow down!... Obey!... Snitch!...

Yup- some folks just really cheap out on things until after something happens- but i guess like most of us, we have to learn the hard way-
