I think “haole” (pronounced “howlie”) literally simply means foreign; it’s been transformed by usage into a derogatory term for whites, probably mainlanders in general for that matter.

Husband, youngest of 3 boys and 1 girl, lived in Pearl City during his middle school years. (Their dad, now deceased, was career Navy, retired after 23 years as Chief Petty Officer.)
