Melting ice imperils 98% of Emperor penguin colonies by 2100

With climate change threatening the sea ice habitat of Emperor penguins, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday announced a proposal to list the species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

“The lifecycle of Emperor penguins is tied to having stable sea ice, which they need to breed, to feed and to molt,” said Stephanie Jenouvrier, a penguin ecologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Research published Tuesday in the journal Global Change Biology found that by 2100, 98% of Emperor penguin colonies may be pushed to the brink of extinction, if no changes are made to current rates of carbon emissions and climate change.

Around 70% of colonies will be in danger sooner, by 2050.

The new study looked at overall warming trends and the increasing likelihood of extreme weather fluctuations due to global warming. And it noted that extremely low levels of sea ice in 2016 led to a massive breeding failure of an Emperor penguin colony in Antarctica’s Halley Bay.

That year, seasonal sea ice broke up before penguin chicks had time to develop waterproof adult feathers, and about 10,000 baby birds drowned, Jenouvrier said. The colony did not recover afterward. …

How do we know what Jenouvrier really did to the colony? None of us were there.

And 2100? Thought we had less than nine years left, not 79 years?

Maybe AOC has given us an extension now that Dems are back in power.

She raised the climate ceiling? Wow, is there anything she can’t do.

What if a major sea ice/climate change is not attributable to mankind but is a natural phenomenon of nature? That would leave these climate change scientists with Penguin crap on their faces, wouldn’t it?

And who says that carbon emissions is the cause of any or all climate change/sea-ice changes, or anything else, esp. if reforestation efforts around the world provide a major carbon-absorbing/retaining partial solution to the problem.

As long as Red China and some other underdeveloped countries continue to use coal, coal oil, etc. as their major source of fuel, carbon emissions will remain high. The US has done a good job of reducing these emissions downward, thus providing us with cleaner/healthier air, while still giving plants the CO2 they need to grow.

It is the Red Chinese who now are the major polluters of the atmosphere, but who is going to make them do anything about it? The UN? Biden and the EPA? Tree-huggers? Scientists who hide inside universities?

The Red Chinese would have them all for a snack.

Disasters happen. Rome burned. Earthquakes everywhere. Forest Fires. The Johnstown Flood. The Great Fire of London. Tsunamis. Hurricanes. Tornadoes. You name it.

Some penguins living on some God forsaken iceberg don't get a special pass or reprieve. They take their chances like every living thing. They aren't "special".

The Emperor penguin demise began when Ernest Shackleton’s men ate them to survive their Antarctic ordeal.

“Carbon emissions” are and were never the problem.

USF&W has a say in Antarctica? The ESA is global in reach?

Oh dear, the Emperor penguin is soon going to join the Polar Bear in extinction. The horror…

What gets me is how they could figure out 70% in 29 years and 98% in 79 years. Especially when we have less than nine years left . . .

So what? No particular species is essential for Earth’s continued operation. That includes homo sapiens too.

Horse manure.

What is all this crap about sea ice. Aren’t these little guys living in Antarctica? That is LAND covered by ice.

So what pray tell does stable sea ice really have to do with it? Even it did, the Emperor’s would adjust as needed to their conditions. Unlike the author and her wild ideas.

The U.S. government has previously listed species outside the country as threatened, including the polar bear, which lives in Arctic regions and is also imperiled by climate change and sea ice loss.

So we jump from Antarctica to the Arctic with the stroke of a pen. I’m calling horse manure on this one about polar bears as well. Bad mommie penguins get a pass for not telling their young they might drown without their adult swimming feathers.

...and that was one colony out of how many?

My previous made one error about them living in Antarctica. They actually live in the sea, but lay eggs on land covered with ice. Perhaps the sea ice is enough that they aren’t actually over land, but nevertheless they are highly adaptable as this publication attests.

This is the major fault of this lie called climate charge. They always extrapolate the issues to decades from now when we can barely predict the weather a week from now.

They are too fat, probably tasting fishy.
I would eat them only, if there is nothing else.
