New timeline announced for replacement of I-5 bridge

VANCOUVER, Wash. — The push to replace the Interstate 5 bridge is far enough along that officials have released a timeline for the design and construction of the new bridge.

It is no small project to replace a bridge that is part of a major interstate freeway connecting Oregon and Washington across the Columbia River.

But the effort is on with the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program. The organization representing both states has been working up a new bridge-building plan for more than a year.

It recently released a timeline that would have a bridge design in place by next May and construction starting in mid-2025.

An interstate bridge commuter told KGW she's ready for something better.

“Traffic on I-5 on the bridge, it's really, it's sometimes a bad commute,” said Sharifa Alkhativ, who has been commuting across the Interstate Bridge for 18 years.

Along with the awful traffic jams, the existing bridge has little to offer mass transit, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Looks like the definition of insanity on a number of levels.

More like a few decades.

Several million dollars have been spent on the i/5 bridge replacement plan already.

By 2024, that figure should be approaching a billion dollars.

Just part of the daily gauntlet WA drivers have to face ... concrete chunks busting windshields in Tacoma / Seattle, hours long traffic jams across the Columbia to Portland, where challenging speed limitations of 50 in tight, blind freeway curves on Portland’s freeways create opportunity for havoc. Then you face lanes so full of trucks you can’t see road signs for exits, etc.

Well over a billion easy, since we are looking at crossing a major river high enough to allow ocean going traffic to pass underneath.

One of the great tax straddles in the USA depends on the I-5 bridge over the Columbia River. If you live in Washington state, you don’t pay any state income tax. If you shop in Oregon, you don’t pay any state sales tax.

The ancient bridge is actually three lanes in each direction. The first span was built in 1905.

IIRC it was the light rail issue that sunk the last design. This was being pushed by Portland’s Metro Transit. But the addition caused height issues for both the river travel and air traffic from Portland International Airport

And Oregonians are not required to pay any sales tax when they shop in Washington if they let the check out clerk know and fill out form.

I always took the freeway through there the few times I go to Portland from Seattle - yeah that bridge isn’t the best. A few months ago I took a back road to the west of Portland heading north along the west side of the river.

Really nice drive once I got out of Portland suburbia - never been that way before.
