Fire engulfs Tesla Model S in San Diego
This #tesla @Tesla exploded on my block at 1 AM here in #sandiego . Is this something that has been happening? It was parked and there was a gunshot-like noise that woke me up. By the time I decided to get up and go outside the fire department was hosing it down. pic.twitter.com/9q5VDui1at

The doors on the other side appear to be intact.
My guess is fire department access.
Is that a Tesla battery pack.
How many of those little batteries are in that?
It just seems like a LOT of little connections to go gunnnybag.
I took one apart that was out of a ford escape once.
All those connections...there must be a better way.
Now, if only AOC’s Tesla would light up, then Karma would reign supreme!
It depends on the model, but you are talking thousands.
This is actually quite common, although suppressed by the media for obvious reasons.
Luckily nobody was inside (I hope).
Last year an exploding Prius battery started the Bush fire, one of the greatest forest fires in AZ history.
Those overpriced golf karts sure burn up nice.

I thought that was a joke - but no. The joke is on us - I thought it was some sort of solid brick, not made up of thousands of individual batteries I could buy in the grocery story or on Amazon.

Aren’t the batteries on the current Teslas... lithium ion batteries?
If so— even if one section catches fire the others could have their insulation burned off exposing lithium metal-— to which the firemen are applying..... water.
Water + Lithium= hydrogen gas and Lithium Hydroxide. The hydrogen gas is explosive.
So- guessing they hope they can hose down the lithium and the flames together such that the flames don’t ignite the hydrogen produced from water and Lithium. A thought.
Damn expensive fire.
Radio Shack really missed the boat.
They could have had the Tesla battery pack club.
Pretty soon insurance companies will stop covering electric cars of all makes, not just Tesla..................
That’s not a Model S. The shape of the door handle indicates a Model 3
Seems fair to say that in 2021, there have been a million Teslas on the road. (That number has grown quickly as the year has gone on, but was 900,000 at the start of the year.) There were 12 Tesla drivers killed after 7 months... so figure 22 drivers per million driver-mile-years. The average (2017 data, gathered from 2014-2017 cars is the most recent available) is available 36 drivers killerd per million driver-mile-years. So it looks like Tesla is a particular safe car, although this is a small sample size.
Safer cars include: Ford Fusion Plug-in, Ford Fusion hybrid, Ford Fusion 4WD, Crysler 300, Subaru Legacy, Nissan Leaf, VW Golf, Nissan Juke.
That’s a Model 3…. Not a Model S.
