A major bridge connecting Memphis, Tennessee, to Arkansas reopened to traffic in both directions on Monday afternoon, nearly three months after a crack forced its closure, the Arkansas Department of Transportation announced in a tweet.
The Hernando DeSoto Bridge, which carries Interstate 40 over the Mississippi River, was shut down for repairs May 11 after a routine inspection found a structural crack.
The 3.3-mile bridge was built in the late 1960s to early 1970s and, as one of only two Mississippi River crossings in the Memphis area, carries about 60,000 vehicles daily, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The crack was discovered within the elements of a steel box beam, the state said.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation said in a news release last week that repair workers were expected to have finished their work by Friday. All eastbound lanes had been expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Monday once workers removed their equipment and platforms from that side, followed by the westbound lanes.
The equipment removal was expected to happen one side at a time because this is "the safest scenario for the workers," the release reads.

Good thing they caught it.
Hopefully they will catch the others when they occur.
Just remember, math is racist.
Engineering rigor and standards are white supremacy.
We need woke-designed bridges for BLM supporters.
Someone had to say it.
More than “a crack”....
Indeed.
THAT is a full-on FRACTURE.
Obviously wasn’t in tension, or they’d have found it underwater during a forensic investigation.
Yeah, I think that is probably called something like complete failure of a structural component…
As someone else said - good thing they found it…
Kudos to the skilled trades people who fixed it. MAGA
The contractor that made the repairs in record time is Peter Kiewit Sons Co., they are also the ones that rebuilt the spillway on Oroville Dam in California...
Who knows. Perhaps not. Things are changing. You know. Need an example? Look at South Africa. (Not that I'm excusing Apartheid, which was a terrible system).
A little bondo, hit it with the sander, then paint. Looks good as new.
JD weld is great stuff.
The anc has made apartheid look like heaven.
Hey, crack is racist!
Florida International University built a really nice looking woke bridge. And there was the spectacular Houston Ship Channel Bridge engineered by the same outfit - a Billion dollar project. Fortunately the toll road authority saved the drivers some money by scrapping it before it was finished.
Peter Kiewit is based out of Omaha. They’ve led or been involved with some huge projects including the Chunnel. Another engineering firm in Omaha called HDR built the Hoover Dam bypass. The project manager came to my work and showed a video on the building of the bridge. Amazes me how many smart people there are but there are also a lot of dumb ones too.
I was going to make a reference to Chuck Berry’s “Memphis”, thinking it was referring to this bridge (”Her home is on the south side, high upon a ridge ... just a half a mile from the Mississippi bridge.”) Then I noticed this “old” bridge was built AFTER the song came out! Time flies.

Thanks for the research...
Wow. I’m breaking out in a sweat just looking at the crack above the water.
