Proving that dinosaurs were not too bright.
Um …? I think birds survived because they could FLY to where the food was!
Ping...
And possibly because they could hide from a burning sky.
Thanks Redcitizen.
And whoops, forgot to ping the list on this one:
I’ve had a Bad Company song stuck in my head for two hours, now...
Pretty much every land animal that survived the Chicxulub impact was a burrow dweller/nester.
Nothing much larger than a house cat made it through.
Given that, I’d guess the surviving early birds were like modern puffins, or burrowing owls, to name only two of the numerous modern examples.
I think the complexity of 3 dimensional travel vs. 2 D. resulted in advanced brain development as the 3 D travel became more developed, a feedback loop situation.
Don’t forget the huatzin relic bird.
It’s probably the Gray’s ability to travel in 4 dimensions
that let them survive in the future, while we become
extinct.
I’m sure you’re right, as it relates to brain development. But, when sudden climate changes occurs, having the ability to relocate, quickly…. And knowing where to go, was a big advantage. I doubt the large herbivores were highly mobile. Food sources dried up quickly.
People have pointed out that the survivors of 65mya were mostly small creatures who could hide or like crocs who hid under mud banks and only ate occasionally. Another suggestion was that the blast through the atmosphere destroyed most of the protective ozone, leaving large bare skinned dinosaurs vulnerable to skin cancer. On the other hand birds were covered with feathers which gave them protection and in addition to being able to hide, the small mammals also had hair on their bodies.
