It sounds like Dusty Hill was in considerable pain/discomfort. Broken shoulder, broken hip...still bothering him. There’s one possible scenario that hasn’t been mentioned (that I’ve seen). Pain will drive people to do things that they normally wouldn’t.
Dusty Hill has left the building...
But it’s good to see them carry on.
A good friend in Louisiana told me he did not want a traditional funeral, “turn on the rock & roll and tell me see ya later” is what he told me a dozen times. He knew cancer was spreading - chemo, which I begged him not to do - and his days were numbered. Chemo destroys most of your organs then destroys the immune system, not only allowing cancer to spread but encouraging it. Guaranteed death sentence, but guaranteed couple hundred grand for the doctors. I hate the medical industry...I’ve lost 2 friends to chemo...
Hardest thing I ever did was turn on some Johnny Winter, crank it up and tell him goodbye...but that’s what he wanted, that’s what I promised.
I didn’t know him 50 years, but I have an idea how Billy feels. I promised Rod no waterworks...a promise I was not able to keep...
I hope the reverend Willie G can hang in there...
It is interesting that another bassist- Chris Squire of Yes- voiced similar sentiments- ‘Get someone to replace me and the Show Must Go On’.
RIP, Dusty Hill. Thanks for the great music.
🎩🎸⚘RIP
Says a lot about the character of the band that Dusty had kept the same guitar tech for thirty years. And now he’s growing a beard. That just makes me smile.
Some great ZZ Top concerts on YT.
This is one from Germany in 1980

They’ve been even more popular in Europe than the US for quite awhile.
