McClellan was also the designer of the one piece of equipment that has seen the longest continuous issue in the US military inventory. The McClellan saddle was officially adopted in 1859 and (with some modification) remained in use until the end of horse cavalry and horse drawn artillery units during WWII. It has remained in use with ceremonial mounted units to this day.

The USMC officer's Mameluke Sword was first adopted (officially) in 1825, but was dropped from the uniform for a period between 1859–1875 before again becoming part of the uniform.
