On July 25, 1861 was the first Battle of Mesilla, New Mexico, a Confederate victory.
This totals 26 engagements (22 decisive) so far, of which seven were in Confederate Virginia (all Confederate victories), and 15 in Union states or territories of Maryland, West Virginia, Missouri and New Mexico.
Of those 15 engagements outside the Confederacy, Confederates won 5 -- one in Union West Virginia, three in Union Missouri and one in Union New Mexico.
So, it seems Democrat-Confederates did seek conquest after all.
