Cases are rising (in all 50 States), but numbers are still lower than previous waves. The fatality rate per case is expected to be significantly lower for this (Delta) wave, because those over 65 are already almost 80% fully vaccinated (almost 90% with at least a first shot).
A COVID vaccine for children under 12 is likely coming in a few months, Resident Joe Biden said, at a CNN Town Hall in Cincinnati on Wednesday (21 July). Both Pfizer and Moderna started trials for children under 12 in March (2021). He also seemed to indicate that full approval for Pfizer and Moderna was likely in the coming months.
Two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine are 88 percent effective against the delta variant, according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday (21 July 21), from researchers at Public Health England. That is only modestly lower than the 93.7 percent effectiveness against the alpha variant, and much better than the 64% indicated in a recent Israeli study. Only a single dose of Pfizer was reported to be much less effective (36%) in this new study, similar to the gap previously reported between one or two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, against the Delta variant.
The 2020 Olympics are set to begin tomorrow in Tokyo, amid a growing COVID outbreak there, that seems about to exceed that of this last Winter. The increase rate of new positive cases has been continuously rising since June, and rose 60% in the last week. All spectators were banned from Olympic venues in the host city after an earlier ban on foreign visitors. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihde Suga put the entire country under a state of emergency that will last through the entire Olympic Games.
Germany is seeing case numbers accelerate this month with Delta spreading there, but they are still low. Slightly over 60% of the German population had received a first dose of vaccine by Thursday, while 48% were fully vaccinated.
Vietnam is in talks with the United States on domestic production of mRNA vaccines. Production (100-200 million/year) could begin in the fourth quarter or early in 2022. Vietnamese firm Vabiotech said they had produced the first test batch of Sputnik V vaccine. Vabiotech is also in talks with a Japanese partner to soon transfer vaccine production technologies to Vietnam. Vietnam will receive 3 million shots of Moderna's vaccine on July 25 from the United States, adding to the 2 million Moderna doses the United States shipped it on July 10.

I predict the USA tops 50,000 cases today.
The vaccines are performing beautifully. Across all major metroplex es including Florida 97% of the cases are unvaccinated. And 100% of deaths and critically ill are unvaccinated. The few that breakthrough are either handled by monoclonal in outpatient therapy or spend less than 2 days in the hospital.
The data are compelling and much to the chagrin of some….overwhelmingly favorable to the fact that these vaccines are working amazingly well.
And we have President Trump to thank for these “beautiful” vaccines!

Just topped it yesterday - 55,132.
Case numbers are accelerating pretty quickly now - hitting a steep part of the curve.
Hospitalizations are still accelerating, but they are not yet rising as steeply. Deaths still show the smallest rate of increase among the three.
That is how it is expected to be - hospitalizations lag after changes in cases, and deaths lag changes in the number hospitalized.
Hopefully, deaths won’t rise as much in proportion to cases and hospitalizations on this wave, because more of the vulnerable are vaccine protected. That is what we have seen with the Delta waves in Israel and the UK.
The next few weeks will indicate how far Delta is going to run in the USA, by all three measures.
Vaxxed people can still get Covid, they just don’t go to the hospital. Cases #’s are becoming irrelevant.

Thank God, and thank President Trump - because Delta is now starting its run here in earnest, and it would be a very different situation, if we did not have so many of our elderly already protected.

We are talking about nearly 70% of the adults in America, who have been vaccinated against COVID.
Amen. we are still seeing the younger unvaccinated aged crowd in the hospital. if we did not have the vaccine it would be a much different story

Yes, they are accurate. They are reported from the ground level. I have numerous colleagues in the state who report the same thing.

Cases have always been a low quality indicator. Not useless, but the context of the numbers varies widely. Positivity rate is a little better, but hospital and ICU admissions, and deaths have always been the best indicators.
Now, suddenly all the antivaxxers are screaming look! Israel! Cases! Despite Israel's deaths being down 97%. Now suddenly deaths (or lack of deaths) don't matter. Cases!
There are lists of vaxxed people but no list of vaxxed people who’ve died from the vaccinations or from COVID after they’re been vaccinated; CDC doesn’t list them. It would be nice to know.
