What do we know about the 143 hospitalized people? Of the 143 hospitalized patients, 58% were vaccinated, 39% were not at all, and 3% were partially vaccinated.

We know that on January 15th, before the vaccine drive in Israel, they had 2189 people hospitalized with Covid. Yesterday they had 140.

In England this month so far, 40% of those hospitalized were fully immunized, even though England has an 83% vaccine compliance rate. Yet in June, 117 ppl died from Covid, only 44 of whom were unvaccinated; approximately 55 were fully vaccinated and the remainder had an unknown vaccination status. So when ppl say “you have zero chance of being hospitalized or dying from Covid when you get the vaccine,” I say “bollocks!”

What we know about vaccines in general is no vaccine and no naturally acquired immunity is guaranteed 100% effective all the time every time in every individual at every age and health bracket. With a 98% effective vaccine, 2% will be outliers.

What we know about Israel in particular is, to quote the WaPo the 85% adult fully vaccinated population is “five times the unvaccinated” population. So the unvaccinated population is very small as a percentage of the population.

Say I have 20 beans and 5 are blue; that’s 20% of the total. But if I have 100 beans and 5 are blue that’s 5% of the total. So when you read that 15 vaccinated and 5 unvaccinated died, it doesn’t mean that vaccinated are dying at a higher rate than unvaccinated - the reverse is true - the group of vaccinated is 5 times larger, so 15 is a lower percentage of the total vaccined group than 5 is as a percentage of the unvaccinated group. The unvaccinated are still dying at a higher rate.

Israel has 12 people on ventilator, only 3 are vaccinated. Admissions to ICU are 1/20th the rate of the pre-vax rate and the Times of Israel reported today that the length of stay is down 34% from 12 days to 8 days. The overall death rate in Israel is currently 1.6%, down from 4% pre-vax. The Health Ministry reports only 144 hospitalizations as of today, Wednesday (and half are quarantined mild cases or covid cases with non-related issues). Hamodia posted today that 150 new cases of Delta were returning from other countries. ( A year ago, they had an article that a similar number of travelers accounted for over 80% of new covid cases.)

Unless something changes, Israel’s numbers prove that existing vaccines are having a significant impact on disease progression to hospitization stage and on final outcome even against faster replicating variants. And that is a very good thing.
