Six swimmers who thought they were going to represent Poland at the Olympic Games this month were sent home after an oversight allowed them to get to Tokyo as part of the team.
Alicja Tchorz, Bartosz Piszczorowicz, Aleksandra Polanska, Mateusz Chowaniec, Dominika Kossakowska and Jan Holub were identified as the swimmers who were sent home after being told they were a part of the Olympic team. According to Reuters, the Poland swimming federation (PZP) sent 23 swimmers to Japan but were forced to cut the roster down to 17 based on qualifying rules.
PZP president Pawel Slominski apologized for the administrative error.

There’s only one Polish joke, the rest are true.
I thought the six swimmers had qualified but by some clerical error had to go home (like getting their passports approved a day late or something).
I was going to make a joke about their last names causing confusion in the clerical error, but I won’t go there.

They should be given a participation trophy.
I feel sorry for them. How disappointing to have the adults eff up your expectations.

I have a cousin who was an olympic hopeful for 1980 in Moscow when Carter announced the boycott. He was always a high achiever and has done ok for himself, but he’s always seemed to carry around a touch of sadness wondering what might have been.
