Lost my Cable and internet for two whole days -due to a regional outage. Finally a technician shows up and fixes everything in 15 minutes.
I had no idea how miserable it could be to have no news and weather updates - but worse - I could not log on to FReeRepublic or get emails.
Not a crisis, like floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires or hurricanes - but it made me realize how fortunate I am to live on this Earth in this country. right now.
God Bless sod
Younger people cannot comprehend. We used to unfold these gigantic maps in the car. Some were local but others would be of the entire Southeastern USA for example. We'd have to first locate where we were on the map and then plot a course to where we were going to go. We were completely ignorant of road construction projects and such so sometimes we'd navigate ourselves into a massive traffic jam.
And then those maps would never fold back together in quite the same neat way. Eventually, we'd get frustrated and toss the entire map into the trash.
If you were taking a longer trip and belonged to AAA, they would provide you with a customized flip map called "Trip Tik" and a human person would put it together for you and highlight in magic marker where you needed to go. As a child, I was always put in charge of this and was the designated navigator.
Don't forget your Traveller's Cheques!
I used TripTiks in some early state-state jaunts.
You could tell travelers by the compass on their dash or windshield.
And there was one correct way to look at a map. North up.
lets donate TODAY to the freepathon....you never know what you got til its gone....COME ON FREEPERS....
I just tether to my iPhone cell connection and keep on going.
Their map books were a lot better. Still have them around.
This solution doesn’t work for everyone but depending on your data plan if you have a cellphone you can either surf on your phone or you can create a mobile hotspot and pair your computer to your phone and connect to the web that way.
FR is a fairly low data hog (no popups or videos or audio). Some pictures are probably larger than they need to be but still not that big of a bite.
>>Two days wasn’t enough to get past the withdrawal period.
>>You almost made it.
Reminds me how when some really big news would break (like 9-11-2001) Rush Limbaugh would be out of the studio.
The Amish manage (although someone in the community may still connect to the WWW).
Glad to see you’re back, Sod. I try not to miss your posts.
I do miss how much simpler things seemed before all the gadgets came along. Though only briefly . . .
Buy a 2 meter hand-held. You won’t be able to transmit without a license but can listen all you want. They typically have a ‘scan’ feature. No scheduled news but you will find HAMs talking about local emergencies as they’re occurring ...And providing assistance to area govt. agencies. I have all of $59 into mine.
Did they Cox/Hughes/CL/Verizon/Frontier/ATT show you how to reset modem/router yourself?
Oh Jeez... So fire up the oven and bake some bread or muffins. Marinate some stuff for BBQ. Contrary to popular belief we can actually live though it fine. Time to practice for what will indeed come soon.
Go camping...
True that. An EMP won’t bother the Amish much at all. I wonder if they’re well armed...
Iphone hotspot when needed.
Two days without interwebs would be jusss tarrribull
Stealing an old joke=
I didn’t have to worry about anything at all. My wife knows everything and tells me so.
Been on that route!!
Use your internet wisely!
Hi, soddy!
Long time...no see.
Hope you are well.
A few months ago we ditched $170/mo. DirecTV. Got Fubo for about $40/month, and bought a Roku for $30 flat — no monthly cost. We get SO much more than we did before.
We got Prime for fast shipping service, but watch it sometimes.
Just switched from Verizon to T-Mobile and the 55+ plan has free Netflix. We cancelled our Netflix years ago, when the Obamas went there, but it’s there to watch if we want to.
You don’t really believe that it is a coincidence that Big Tech cut you off from real news, do you?
They were just following Biden’s orders.
And Biden just does what his Chinese masters tell him to.
