Lost my Cable and internet for two whole days -due to a regional outage. Finally a technician shows up and fixes everything in 15 minutes.
I had no idea how miserable it could be to have no news and weather updates - but worse - I could not log on to FReeRepublic or get emails.
Not a crisis, like floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, fires or hurricanes - but it made me realize how fortunate I am to live on this Earth in this country. right now.
God Bless sod
Not sure how a regional outage required something at your physical location to be fixed. Usually it's the cable returns, you reboot the cable modem, and then you reboot your PC(s). Sometimes, not even the last two are needed.
The cost alone is a perfect reason to do exactly that.
I'm currently OTA, and that's plenty for me. The indoor antenna was inexpensive and paid for itself very quickly. OTA networks like ANT-TV, ME-TV, and GRIT run great "retro" shows and Westerns, and local news stations are off except when I want to check the weather.
When my cable Internet goes out, I set my iPhone up as a “hotspot.” I can access the internet through T-Mobile cellular. It’s very handy for those outages when you must get on FR.
Years ago, some of my family met up in San Antonio. We were sitting at an outside table, my son was was reading a weather report from his phone. After he read it, I looked at the sky and said, “I could have told you that”.
Dang!
You missed Xiden being carried out of the WH in a straight jacket...
My B-I-L is also the owner of a Flip Phone, probably the last guy in Town with one.
If you leave him a Voicemail, chances are he will forget how to retrieve it. He just looks at the last number called and calls you back when he gets around to it, if the number looks familiar to him that is.
A few of us might even know what this busybody is up to…
No smartphone?
Before all that?
Smoke signals.
How do you like T-Mobile?
T-Mobile has a Geezer plan that costs a flat $70 a Month for two Lines with no Data Cap.
Our current ATT Prepaid is about $75 a Month for two Lines with limited Data.
Not sure if it’s worth the trouble to switch over. There is no T-Mobile Store close to us so I wonder about the Coverage in this area.
An early IT device.
Snooping on a party line call.
Growing up, our house had a ‘party line’. You would pick up the phone, and you could hear the conversation of the other party. It did make a click so you knew someone else was on the line.
Before the wheel?
Before fire?
There’s enough youtube FREE that satisfies the video crave
I live in the sticks. I also just retired a few weeks ago. The only thing I’d miss is the ability to order parts and things online, and the ability to watch YouTube videos that help me figure out how to do things and fix things.
We switched from Verizon to T-Mobile about three months ago. So far it has been AWFUL. I have a new iPhone 12 w 5G. Constant dropped calls. Calls that don’t go through. Constant garbled voice. Verizon wasn’t very good, but TM is far worse. I don’t know if it is the phone, 5G, or TM. The web is chock full of complaints like mine all over the country.
We can get Spectrum mobile with unlimited voice, text and data for $45/month/person. They outsource to Verizon. I’m thinking that we need to quit TM, but we probably have to waait a year because they paid off our phone debts when we switched to them.
Yep. IT = “Interoffice Telecommunication”
I’ve lived in the Kentucky sticks for 10 years now. Eight of those years I used an AT&t hotspot as my internet access for everything. This even included working from home.
