THE ADVANCE: Movements of the National Army; SKIRMISHING AT BULL’S RUN; EIGHT THOUSAND TROOPS ENGAGED; Forty of our Men Killed and Wounded (7/20/1861)

WASHINGTON, Friday, July 19.

I left our advance camp at 10 o'clock this morning. All the columns had come together, and were encamped one mile this side of Centreville, and four from Bull's Run.

No movement was intended to-day. The roads and works of the rebels were to be reconnoitered, and an advance movement will be made to-morrow.

The rebel batteries will not be attacked in front if they can be turned.

This city is full of absurd rumors about the Bull's Run affair. Nothing whatever was attempted after the ceasing of the fire of our batteries.

The Sixty-ninth and Seventy-ninth New-York Regiments, which are said to have charged the batteries, were not in the action at all; they came up just as it was closing, and were not brought to the front.

Nothing has been heard from Gen. PATTERSON to-day.

The rebels at Manassas are supposed to be quite as strong as we are, besides being strongly intrenched.

Gen. MCDOWELL is greatly incensed at the depredations of our troops and at the insults heaped upon some of the prisoners who were brought into camp. He has issued a general order, threatening all offenders in this way with severe punishment.

Our provision wagons had come up, and the men will move to-morrow morning early. Our men will depend largely on their artillery, which is numerous and good.

There are no later advices from camp than these, though the town is filled with rumors of another battle -- they are utterly unfounded.

I leave for Head-quarters at three in the morning. H.J.R.

The book below is an excellent run up to the events your posting. 9/10th of the book is not about the plot to kill Lincoln, it’s great at capturing the mindset of the country at the time and why they more then half the country wanted to kill him.

The Lincoln Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill America’s 16th President (elect)—and Why It Failed
