I should mention something else worth noting: in only two of the 23 engagements was the outnumbered side victorious:
  1. At Big Bethel, VA, Butler outnumbered Magruder 2.5 to 1, but bungled the operation.

  2. At Scary Creek, WVA, Cox outnumbered Wise & Patton 1,000 to 800, but CSA is credited with victory in a confused battle.
Clearly numbers mattered.
