WASHINGTON, Tuesday, July 16.
The army in Virgina to-day took up the line of march for Richmond, via Fairfax and Manassas. The force starting to-day was fully fifty thousand strong, the number reaching by actual count about fifty-three thousand. These, as I wrote yesterday, are about three thousand Regular Infantry, Cavalry.
and Artillery, and fifty thousand volunteers.
The two Rhode Island, the Seventy-first New-York and the Second New-Hampshire, comprising Col. BURNSIDE's Brigade, went over the Bridge about 4 o'clock this afternoon, and struct the road for Fairfax Court-house. The Twenty-seventh New-York, Col. SLOCUM, went over at 5 o'clock, and also took the Fairfax route-step. As these regiments came together and passed the encampments, the soldiers cheered lustily, and shouted congratulations to each other that they were fairly on the road to the rebel capital.
The De Kalb Regiment this afternoon went ever the Bridge and went into Camp Runyon.
In all there have seven thousand men passed into Virginia since daylight.
ANOTHER NAME STEICKEN OFF.
The name of H.N. HERMANS has been stricken from the list of Lieutenants in the Army. He was one of the last appointments. His reputation was so bad that influential Senators frankly told; Secretary CAMERON that he would be rejected if his name was sent to the Senate for confirmation. Upon being assured of the tree character of HERMANS, the Secretary promptly caused his name to be stricken off.
MR. ANDREWS CONFIRMED.
RUFUS F. ANDREWS was to-day confirmed as Surveyor. The rules were suspended, and the vote was unanimous.
THE TARIFF.
I am assured by a member of the House Committee of Ways and Means that no modifications of the Morrill Tariff will be attempted at this session.

The North has some bad news coming in a few days!
“Rebels to be overwhelmed” at First Manassas (aka “Bull Run”). Nothing like a little over-confidence with your morning coffee.
The Times has me rooting for the South!

One of my GGGrandfathers was wounded at First Manassas. He was a corporal in the 49th Va on the left flank of Jackson’s brigade. He fought until late 1864 when captured in the Shenandoah Valley, rose to the rank of sergeant, was wounded again at the Wilderness, released from Point Lookout prison camp in Feb. 1865.
