WASHINGTON, Saturday, July 13.

Gen. McCLELLAN reports that perhaps 20 of his men were killed and 40 wounded, and not 50 killed, in the late engagement, as erroneonsly stated.

The Government is still engaged in making such arrangements as will render the condition of the troops more comfortable, and providing for every possible comfort for the sick.

The improvement in the military drill and discipline of the volunteers is such as to elicit the highest encomiums from army veterans.

W.D. SHEPHERD, of Washington, has been awarded the contract for furnishing stationery to the interior Department.

It appears from calculations at the Post-office Department, that the yearly income from postage in the seceded States amounted to only $900,000. while the expenses of the transportation of the mails exceeded this sum by $3,000,000, which is now saved to the Government by their suspension in these States.

Good morning Professor.

Given the state of the current armed forces, I’d have to say that “encomiums” wouldn’t be a word I would use.

Addendum.

I spent 6 years in Uncle Sam's boys club. Forty plus years ago, and I'm highly suspect of the O 5s and above to right the ship.

Cliche yes, but I've seen this movie before.

I had to chuckle at the note about the postage revenue loss from the secession. It was offset 3x by the save expense of sending the mail to the south.

Even in 1860 the Post Office couldn’t manage to run their operations efficiently.
