Athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will sleep on beds made from recycled cardboard and customisable mattresses by Japanese bedding company Airweave.
Airweave has created 18,000 beds and mattresses for athletes at this summer's Olympics, 8,000 of which will be repurposed for use by athletes at the Paralympics.
The bed frames are made from recycled cardboard, while the modular mattresses are made from polyethylene fibres that the brand says can be recycled an unlimited number of times.
The sleeping equipment had to align with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games' sustainability plan, which aims to deliver a more sustainable event and showcase innovative concepts and solutions that will have a legacy after the Games.
"The concept was to make a lightweight, easy-to-assemble mattress and meet the Games' Sustainability Plan," Airweave told Dezeen.

Notice, no mention of comfort for the athletes.
Imagine the athletes that are even somewhat big and heavy trying to sleep on that.
Were I an athlete, I'd say "no" to the Olympic village and stay at a hotel.
Just use the same box for shipping them and sleeping.
Corrugated cardboard can make very strong structures. Top it off with My Pillow bedding, sheets and pillows.
Why do the Olympics need a sustainability plan?
Can you get a gold medal in virtue signaling?

I’ve seen these demonstrated - they are extremely strong. Far stronger than a lot of modern furniture I’ve seen.
Can’t speak to long term comfort but it seemed pretty good short term.
Yeah, how silly. Why would the athletes actually need good nights sleep?

Depending upon the mattress used they should be comfortable.
Olympic hookups will have to be at a hotel.
The beds will get minimal use if any.

I wonder if the design, beyond the Games’ Sustainability Plan, was a reaction to COVID over a year ago. Any bed and bedding exposed to a positive COVID athlete could be removed and recycled, something that would be impracticable with standard beds, mattress, and bedding.
Actually the customizability might make these beds more comfortable than conventional ones.
Seems to have potential for homeless, disasters etc.
LOL! If the stories I hear of the athletes are true, those things will have to be replaced on a daily basis!

🤣
Hard to say...
Just wondering how they were stored for the past year.
