My question was, for you to cite one measly fact that you could be used to define Long as a fascist. You can not come up with one, just a continuation of restatement of accusations.

Also, you have no idea what was in Long’s heart as far as desiring to be a dictator.

Well I’d say Long fancied himself more a caudillo in the making ... .....I also think he did indeed have an affinity for the poor in spite of his appetite for power. I duck hunted with his son Russell both at Matthews Brake in the Mississippi delta and near Lake Charles ....Russell was pretty much typical southern democrat of his era....conservative socially and new deal about cash policies and evolving with the wind segregationist and machine politic oriented ....the Longs controlled Louisiana politics way beyond Kingfish assasination but Russell was no fascist .......Russell was polite and affable to be honest....not a great caller but decent wing shooter ......

More importantly was Edwin Edwards not a stud....hot wyfe and a kid at like 84....a man after my own heart...incredible....she is fine as frogs hair

Unfortunately, as a radical leftist, Huey didn’t know how to create wealth beyond stealing it from the rich. No different than today’s Demonrats. His son, fortunately for him, didn’t possess his father’s megalomaniacal tendencies and was more mainstream a pol, and obviously proved supple enough to last 4 decades in the Senate.

As for Fast Eddie, you might recall he gave his first wife, Elaine, (the then-first lady) the consolation prize of Huey’s old Senate seat after Allen Ellender died in 1972. She passed away in 2018.

I was surprised to see his third wife is younger than myself. I can understand wanting to prove your virility, but I feel a bit badly for his son, Eli, who turns just 8 on August 1st and will not have his dad during his key years. A bit selfish on dad’s part. :-(

I’m not sure what part you were referring to as not accurate.

I never accused Huey of being a liberal. The Demonrat party in the 1930s had already become a hardcore Socialist party, save for a few individuals (and sadly, by 1937, what few Republicans were remaining in the Senate were also Socialists). It was, after all, taken over by the Socialists in 1896 when they deposed Cleveland and the center-right Bourbons. Huey was raised a Communist and believed his totalitarian schtick to destroy all these evil rich people. That’s the mainstream of today’s Demonrat Communist-Fascist party.

I also certainly didn’t accuse Fast Eddie of raping his young wife (whut ?!). I just said it was selfish on his part at the age of 84 to have a child that he wouldn’t likely live to see grow to adulthood (at the very least, do the math and see that you’d have to be 102 to see the kid graduate from high school). Even Strom Thurmond hung it up at about 73 with his final child. Kids need both their parents, not a memory of one or both.

Besides, at the rate I’m going, I’ll be at or past 50 before I have children. At least my father is still in good health at almost 82. I have ancestors that were middle aged before they had kids, but fortunately most lived to see their children to adulthood.

What exactly did this Socialist do for Louisiana to lift it out of the Depression him and his fellow leftists helped proliferate ? Stealing from the rich doesn’t count. Neither does building that gigantic monument to his ego in Baton Rouge, either.

There’s always something or someone worse I’ve learned in life. FDR was clearly very terrified of him, because not only would he have been displaced (and consigned FDR to the political heap as a failed one-term President), but Long would’ve implemented the entirety of FDR’s Socialist agenda by any means necessary (and gone beyond that) and taken all the credit. He would’ve become the Communist dictator, suspending the Constitution, removing judges and other elected officials in his way, using the Depression and what likely would’ve been a popular uprising against these actions as an impetus to take absolute control. The GOP was so weak to dead by 1936/37 that there would’ve been nobody in political opposition to stop him.

Look to what FDR attempted in his second term, court packing (which would’ve effectively outvoted any pesky non-leftist jurists), the purge of the remaining non-Socialist members of the Democrat Party, and continuing expansion of his leftist control. Only Long would’ve been a lot bolder and more aggressive to establish dictatorship (and as it was, FDR was about as close to that as we got, only matched by LBJ).

I don’t think there’s any chance St. Franklin would have lost renomination in 1936. In fact I think Long’s plan was to run turd party, allow the Republican to win (might not have been enough!) and run as a rat in 1940 after “Republicans make the depression worse”.

A very cynical plan.
