LAS VEGAS — This is not how USA Basketball expected to open its Olympic summer.
Nigeria probably didn’t expect it, either.
If there was any expectation of invincibility for the Americans heading into the Tokyo Olympics, it’s already gone — after Nigeria shocked the U.S. 90-87 on Saturday night.
Nigeria pulled off an international shocker with a roster primarily filled of little-known NBA players that found a way to beat a group of All-NBA, All-Star and max-contract performers.
“I thought that the Nigerian team played very physically, did a great job in that regard and knocked down a lot of 3s,” U.S. coach Gregg Popovich said. “Give them credit.”

Just shows how bad the NBA and most other professional sports has become.
nba=nigeria beats america...
I know one thing - Nigeria will respect OUR National Anthem, while the US players certainly will not. So I wish Nigeria the best!
Gonzaga's had at least 3 players in recent history from France that contributed mightily to their success:
Ronny Turiaf
Killian Tillie, now with Memphis:
Joel Ayayi:
BTW, Joel earned his BA last December.
So, did the Nigerian team get the faux Team N B A ‘woke up’ enough?
Screw popovic and the NBA. Hope they get their a$$e$ beat.
Amen
Another reason not to watch if Coach Pizzaface is involved.
His face has more craters than the moon, and bigger too.
All of USAFA is lost, just as the military is. USAFA is obsessed with touting this clown as a Distinguished Grad. He’s a jerk and it’s a slap in the face to the many distinguished grad who achieve and have achieved without running down the country in the process.
America hating slime Gregg Popovich eats sh*t as a coach, huh?
I always think of Usain Bolt, who stopped his interview when he heard the US anthem playing, and he’s Jamaican.
They are really pissed that they did not get an opportunity to disrespect the flag.
But they’re woke and serious warriors (or would that be warriPERSONS) for justice so that’s what really counts.
Ha ha ha ha ha let’s hope they don’t medal so they can’t spite in our face from the podium.
I can only imagine the American team went in with an arrogant over-confidence; that would fit with an NBA attitude.
Thanks. I wondered where Killian Tille ended up. Hope his injury history is behind him. He’s great shooter, defender, and passer. He’s also very smart.
Victor Wembanyama is a name to look out for, actually been watching him in the Under-19 World Cup. He’s still a bit raw, but NBA teams will fall over themselves to get him.
Just saw, US beat France 83-81 to win the Gold Medal at the U-19 Tournament, France might have won had Wenbenyama not fouled out with a few minutes left.
Indeed the rest of the world is catching up.
Ayayi will be drafted in the second round, if not late in the first. Very good shooter, great defender, very good passer. Also rebounds well, and there was no one who moved as well without the ball.
Hope they lose every game
