An unreleased George Harrison song has been made available with a new video to mark the 50th anniversary of his first post-Beatles album, All Things Must Pass.

Titled “Cosmic Empire,” the song is one of 30 rough recordings included in the extended edition of the 1970 LP; 26 of those have been officially released. You can see the new video below.

Sessions for the album began in May 1970, just six weeks after the Beatles’ split was confirmed. “Two days were spent recording 30 demos that were being considered” for the record, Capitol/UMe said in a statement. “The first day, May 26, saw Harrison record 15 songs backed by Ringo Starr and his longtime friend, bassist Klaus Voormann, beginning with ‘All Things Must Pass.’ The following day, May 27, George ran through an additional 15 songs solo for coproducer Phil Spector."

Harrison’s son Dhani said the extended album project had been underway for decades. “Bringing greater sonic clarity to this record was always one of my father’s wishes, and it was something we were working on together right up until he passed in 2001," he explained. "Now, 20 years later, with the help of new technology and the extensive work of Paul Hicks, we have realized this wish and present to you this very special 50th-anniversary release of perhaps his greatest work of art. Every wish will be fulfilled.”

The All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Edition will be released on Aug. 6 in a variety of formats, including Super Deluxe box sets in eight-LP and five-CD/Blu-ray editions with scrapbook and replica poster, and a limited-edition Uber Deluxe crate with two books, a Harrison figurine, beads, scrapbook and a bookmark cut from a tree that grew on his Friar Park estate. Full details can be found at www.georgeharrison.com.

Never was a super fan, but then one time I dreamed I was engaged and to be married to George Harrison. And I was so happy, because I knew I was marrying the nicest guy in the world. Crazy dream, but have always been most fond of him ever since.

George was underappreciated as a Beatles and was the only Beatle who did anything worth listening to after the breakup.

Can’t say I was too impressed. I sure wanted to be, because I love his music.

Yeah, but George had the last laugh when he turned out to be the most commercially successful of all of them after the Beatles.

George was underappreciated as a Beatles and was the only Beatle who did anything worth listening to after the breakup.

"All Things Must Pass" was ok, but "Dark Horse" had too much of the Indian sound and lotsa filler. "Extra Texture" was mostly worthless. I gave up after that, but even the single off of 33 1/3 ("Crackerbox Palace") wasn't anything special. "All Those Years Ago" was okay. I only know the singles off of "Living in the Material World", and certainly have no use for the Hare Krishna lyrics in "My Sweet Lord". Overall, pretty dismal output in my opinion.

The other three all had listenable stuff too, with McCartney putting in the most consistent effort (I LIKED "Venus and Mars" and "Junior's Farm") and Ringo just doing what he felt like doing ("Goodnight Vienna" was a good album).

John Lennon was a bit too self-absorbed. "Rock'n'Roll" was a waste (the originals of his covers were uniformly superior). The singles off of "Walls and Bridges" were good, and that's all. I have even less use for "Imagine" than for "My Sweet Lord". "Starting Over" was a very good half-album, but the other half was Yoko Ono, which is good for negative points.

Released August 6th, 2021

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary, George Harrison's, All Things Must Pass, is being celebrated with a suite of new releases, highlighted by the limited Uber Deluxe Edition, which presents a stunning new mix of the classic album by Grammy Award-winning mixer/engineer Paul Hicks, overseen by executive producer Dhani Harrison, which includes the album on 8LP and 5CD/Blu-ray housed in an artisan designed wooden crate, accompanied by two elegantly designed books paying homage to Harrison's love for gardening and nature.

I should have made it clear that I didn't see his post Beatle work as classic. IMO All Things Must Pass was good but not necessarily great. I enjoyed Crackerbox Palace...it was a cute, fun song. OTOH Handle Me With Care was a genuine classic IMO.

Everything that Paul,John and Ringo did was cr@p IMO...so that puts George at the top of the heap.

Yes,I know that Paul was wildly popular...and John was quite popular...but then Osama Obama is quite popular too.

Good gawd! Sounds like he was coked up or a bad cold and sang off key. Video was great, but I see why the hell he didn’t release it. Just terrible!

I still like Paul’s “Ram” album, still had a bit of an experimental, avant-garde feel to it.

Uh…no.

Paul McCartney by a long shot.

Agree. All Things Must Pass is the best of the solo efforts. Only one i have in my library except for a handful of individual songs.

Totally agree with you about “Crackerjack Palace”! The video was campy fun, too. But whatever happened to his song “Fab”??
